So all that means is we are of the same age. How many 20 year olds or teens would know who W.C. Fields was? Or Mae West for that matter? How many kids today would know "My Little Chickadee" or "Come Up And See Me Some Time" lines between the two actors?

‘Everybody knows’ is a colloquialism for something that is common knowledge, it clearly doesn’t mean that anybody LITERALLY knows it. 

Sort of like when you said there were five billion years between two wars - no one thought you meant a literal period of five billion years. Lighten up.

But to what degree and for how long? Even if someone knows about Lizzie Borden, what are the odds that the most who would know about her are historians and not much further than that?
