As gingerly as Merrick Garland is treading, staying out of jail could indeed be a real benefit of Trump's declaring his candidacy. You're correct in that candidacy conveys no legal immunity, but Garland has been very sensitive (some, myself included, argue too sensitive) to political optics and is almost certainly loath to indict a presidential candidate.
It's largely out of Garland's hands now.
