(CBS News) After 10 years as President of Russia, Vladimir Putin stepped aside and became prime minister. But now, he's running again for his old job, and political barbs are coming his way - some from across the Atlantic.

Sen. John McCain (R, Ariz.) has been needling the Russian leader via Twitter. And Thursday, Putin struck back.

CBS News correspondent Whit Johnson spoke with McCain about the back-and-forth.

It all started when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Russia's parliamentary election process.

But McCain took it a step further -- taking shots at Putin, alluding to massive anti-Putin protests in Russia.

McCain admits he picked a fight with the embattled prime minister.

He tweeted last week, "Dear Vlad, #The ArabSpring is coming to a neighborhood near you."

McCain admits he giggled when he sent the tweet. "You know," he says, "you've gotta have a sense of humor!"

The former GOP presidential nominee says he expected a reaction, but not the bizarre personal attacks Putin delivered Thursday on Russian TV.

"Mr. McCain was imprisoned in Vietnam," Putin said. "They put him in a hole for several years. Anyone would go insane."

Back on Twitter, McCain played it coy, saying, "Dear Vlad, is it something I said?"

"I just think it's a little strange," says McCain, "that, obviously, the leader of one of the world's largest and most powerful countries would worry about what John McCain has to say. I have a pretty high opinion of myself, but not quite that level!"

Both the Obama and Bush administrations have had policies to "reset" ties between the U.S. and Russia.

President Bush famously said he found Putin to be "trustworthy" when he "looked the man in the eye" and got a "sense of his soul."

McCain's view is quite different, as he spelled out during his 2008 run for president.

"The only thing I saw when I looked into his eyes," he observed, "were three letters: K, G and B."

McCain accuses Putin of corruption during his long rule, and believes he'll ultimately have to reform - or get out of the way.

"You know," McCain observes, "this is in some ways amusing, but also, I think it's an indication that he's deeply concerned about these demonstrations."

When asked for comment, the Russian embassy would only say, "The Prime Minister spoke on TV. We will not be saying anything more."

I've always liked McCain - despite disagreeing with his politics, he is a very awesome guy.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. He may be a likable guy, but I've always had the opinion that his mind doesn't fire on all cylinders. His faux paux when campaigning for leader of the free world at the Sturgis Motorcycle rally comes to mind, where he offered up his wife to be "Miss Buffalo Chip", not realizing the sleeziness of the title.

He picked Sarah Palin to be second in line to control 1/2 of the world's nuclear arsenal.

That was scary, wasn't it?

Apres Moi, Les Deluge?

Yeah, I'd definately have to concur here.
The "Miss Buffalo Chip" thing is hilarious (depending on Mrs. McCain's sense of humor) but giving Sarah Palin any amount of governmental power above "Congressional Toilet Clenser" made my vote for Obama a no-brainer.

Why are all the powerful conservative women such idiots (michelle bachman, sarah palin, orley taits, and that AWFUL Christine O'Donnel).
I suppose Condelizza Rice at least knows her shit and at least hasn't been in the news for saying stupid things, but still - compared to the democrats who have people like Nancy Pelosi (agree or disagree with her politics - she's a smart and capable woman), Hiliary Clinton, and that woman whose name I've forgotten who was first in line to lead the Customer Protection Agency but EVERY REPUBLICAN hated the idea (for good reason - at least as far as their biased opinion goes).
Those are GREAT examples of powerful and smart women.

Yeah, and the only explanation I can think of as to why the State of Alaska even voted her to be their governor is the fact that there are far more men in Alaska than women, and perhaps they were thinking/voting with the wrong organ.

As a man from Alaska. I would agree. People are stupid here. She gave everyone a "rebate" like 300 bucks and idiots loved her for the "free" money. And I heard plenty of guys at all the redneck bars, which are all of them, that she is sooo fineeee. When she is not.

I think "fine" means "crazy, and not in a good way" in Alaska. Then again, having spent quite a bit of time up there... With the male/ female ratio being what it is, after awhile, the moose start looking good.

Yeah - to be perfectly honest, I had always wanted to live in Alaska - I like the climate and the prospect of the wilderness, but the male/female ratio is the dealbreaker. I just can't go far from the T&A.
