I personally LOL'ed at "I'll personally kill them, God is the greatest." I seem to remember one of the things their god told them not to do was kill. Or maybe those are just guidelines and not actual commandments.

Well Christians did believe that torture was good for the soul. It cleanses you. Relatively speaking the hours and days of extreme unrelenting pain from, say, having all of your bones broken and then having your body woven through a wagon wheel only to then be exposed on a pole for the birds to peck at your slowly dying body was nothing in comparison to an eternity in heaven. And of course if that didn't work to cleanse you then it was a good fear mechanism to keep all the other people in line.

I'm not really sure to whom the "thou shalt not kill" thing really applied.

I don't know when the "thou shalt not kill" ever applied, especially since there are plenty of times in the OT when the Israelites killed their enemies, and God killed plenty of people. Maybe it only applies to other members of your church, like when I had a fundie tell me that Jesus' command to "love your brother as yourself" only applied to "other brothers in Christ" and apparently it was OK to be a total dick to non-Christians.

Based on the various and sundry tales in the bible (OT and NT), regardless how how the ten commandments may have been intended, it appears that the Israelites applied them only to dealings with other Isrealites. It appears that they didn't have any problem coveting other culture's stuff, killing them, and stealing whatever [or whoever] wasn't nailed down.
