I was browsing through a couple of the recent threads here, but I didn't find one that I thought was dedicated specifically to the discussion of Christians themselves. I'd like to hear your responses to two questions:

1. Would you please define for me what you understand a Christian to be?

With so many flavors, the sensible thing seems to be to allow them to define themselves. I count anyone who calls themself a Christian, a Christian, just like the polltakers who tell us how many Christians there are.

2. Would you please tell me your understanding of how one becomes a Christian?

I know there's usually a bit where you ask Jesus/God for forgiveness but I think that's usually a formality if you were raised Christian. More important for converts. Jack Chick places a lot of store in the sinner's prayer. Sometimes there's sprinkling or dunking, or an expectation of glossolalia. Varies quite a bit.

brief responses that might stimulate deeper discussions are always encouraged. Someone who came from a christian background might have something that I'm looking for. e.g.

1) Someone who has life in Christ, someone who believes in Jesus, etc.
2) Belief in Jesus Christ, baptism, etc.

Life in Christ seems to be shooting rather high, you'd have to cut quite a few from the rolls if you're going to require that. How about 'someone who professes to be a Christian'?

This thread is pointless, because there is over 20,000 Christian denominations. I, myself, was a former Christian. Yeah, I had my beliefs in Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit and God as the "One", which is "trinity". I'm glad I'm out of that superstitious shithole.

Anyway, riverthought. Christians have their own different beliefs, so you should tell us what makes the one a Christian.

No matter what definition one uses,there is always some member of an opposing sect who will scream " he's not a REAL Christian!" That logic is a calle" 'the no true Scotsman fallacy"

For most people religion is purely an accident of birth. Young children absorb the most appalling drivel [about all kinds of things] without question,long before the age of reason. (children trust adults) I have never understood adult conversion.

You don't have to be christened, baptised or any of that stuff, that's my take anyway, i think that's more to do with joining a Jesus cult like Southern Baptist, being a member of a 'special' Jesus fan club.

I'm a Southern Baptist and we do not believe that being baptized is a necessary part of salvation, there are denominations that do though.

1. Someone who is in covenant union with Christ by the will of God.

2. By the grace of regeneration leading to justification, adoption, and sanctification.

A Catholic will insist one must accept the Nicene creed AND the seven sacraments, (Baptism,Confirmation, Penance, Eucharist,Extreme Unction (last rites) Holy Orders and Matrimony)

Even today,Catholics at an official level do not accept other denominations as 'true Christians',considering them ALL in error.

Many protestants believe some Catholics are saved, just as we believe that some within our own denomination are not saved, why don't you try telling the truth on occasion.
