I should mention: witches in this country have been replaced with various things, to include communism and being liberal. The difference is that they're not allowed to hang or burn people for it. But they can do this:

A cat belonging to an Arkansas Democratic campaign manager was found dead with the word "liberal" spray-painted across its side, the campaign manager said.

Found Sunday night, the cat was a pet of Jake Burris, who manages Democrat Ken Aden's bid for Arkansas' 3rd Congressional District. Aden is running against incumbent Republican Representative Steve Womack.

Burris was returning to his Russellville, Arkansas home with his four children when he found the cat on his doorstep, the Aden campaign said in a press release on Monday.

The mixed-breed Siamese cat had one side of its head bashed in to "the point the cat's eyeball was barely hanging from its socket," the release said.

Indeed. Now you can only go around incarcerating people for suspicious nonsense: the US have jailed, by far, the highest percentage of their own population compared to all other countries on the face of the earth! Including North-Korea, Iran, and Russia!

As long as idiots like that are taken seriously in presidential campaigns – measured, say, by airtime or column/inches, they remain a very real danger, and we will dismiss/ignore them at our peril.

I don't know how communists are relevant anymore. Their only big red hope, the Soviet Union is no more. So I don't think that communists should be taken any more seriously, and the same goes for Europe, they are mostly ignored by everyone besides....the younger people who think it's cool to be communist.
Liberals...Well, I don't know what really constitutes a liberal. In Turkey, the term liberal is used in two different contexts.

You're misunderstanding me. Those terms are bandied about here in American without the people who use them having more than the vaguest idea of what they actually mean. Basically they're a stand in for any phrase you might use to explain that someone is not part of the Religious Right.

Well, I don't know. If they were conservatives instead of liberals, no one would call them liberals.
If they self-identify as liberals, it really matters little if the people who use them for those people know what they really stand for.
However, it really does matter with which context you use them. Like for example, calling someone "liberal" or "libosh" as we use the word, can have different meanings depending on who says it.
The same goes for the liberals, when they anyone else but them any names, if they bother to do so.

Being anti communist/socailist seems to be a knee jerk hings for some americans , idoubt very much that they actually know what the words actually mean.

Are you implying that one cannot oppose communism once one understands "what it's all about"?

And socialism...I don't really know. It seems like everyone who claims to help the public can use that word.
Really, socialism means nothing to me. Nationalism in itself does include many allegedly "socialist" tenets and practices.
