Does your friend only ever talk about something if it will help something? If not, tell your friend to STF up. You have a right to discuss whatever interests you. If you think that's too impolite, reflect on the fact that your friend is trying to get YOU to shut up about atheism by criticizing your motives in even talking about it.

Who said I was talking about you?
Simply trying to convince people of something is not always proselytizing. We (meaning myself and those who live around me) live in a democracy, and must live our lives following laws which are made based on the opinions of others, so it is our civic duty to convince others of our ideas.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."

Some theists use the arguments of "It would suck if atheism was true because then there'd be no afterlife therefore God must exist" as if that was evidence for the existence of God.
Even if one agrees it would be better if a God did exists then its like the argument of someone with cancer saying cancer is terrible so it has to be a lie that I have cancer.
For me personally I'd rather go through life with my beliefs based in reality than believing a lie.
