Without lye the soap won't break down in water (it's made of oil). It also is used to relieve the symptoms of poison ivy, reduce the symptoms of eczema, and kills fleas (it;s also the binder). There are probably alternatives though. Maybe try a glycerine base (common in hobby kits in craft shops)?

I've had Rosacea off,and-on for almost 40 years. Currently it's on,but mild.
Gets really bad if I'm stressed or upset.
Treatments:
Have tried a few. The cheapest , most effective AND non prescription treatment for me has been a cream made with rescorsinol and sulfur.I think the sulfur is the active ingredient.
Quote:Rosacea /roʊˈzeɪʃiə/ is a chronic condition characterized by facial erythema (redness).[2] Pimples are sometimes included as part of the definition.[3] Unless it affects the eyes, it is typically a harmless cosmetic condition. Treatment in the form of topical steroids can aggravate the condition.[4]
It primarily affects Caucasians of mainly north western European descent and has been nicknamed the 'curse of the Celts' by some in Britain and Ireland, but can also affect people of other ethnicities. Rosacea affects both sexes, but is almost three times more common in women. It has a peak age of onset between 30 and 60.[citation needed]
Rosacea typically begins as redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose, or forehead, but can also less commonly affect the neck, chest, ears, and scalp.[5] In some cases, additional symptoms, such as semi-permanent redness, telangiectasia (dilation of superficial blood vessels on the face), red domed papules (small bumps) and pustules, red gritty eyes, burning and stinging sensations, and in some advanced cases, a red lobulated nose (rhinophyma), may develop

Thanks Padriac, do you happen to know of a brand name creme that contains those two ingredients?
The only reason I wanted to avoid Lye is I am assuming that would just irritate my skin more. I am going to check out Cetaphil though and see if that fixes my problem. If it does then there is no need for me to make the home-made soap. Btw I tried the baking soda shampoo thing today, was interesting.
Its supposed to be followed up by a diluted mixture of red cider vinegar as a conditioner apparently but I am just trying this at first to see what pans out.
and thanks for the continued links I appreciate all the help.

Not off hand.I had the pharmacist make it up for me on doctor's advice..It looks just like Clearasil. Ask your pharmacist.

While I can/do use a moisturizer I am almost certain the culprit is washing my face with the soap I use. I have tried various body washes but I don't recall if I ever found one that seemed to fix this problem. I think I may be sensitive to the detergents or other chemicals in the store bought stuff not sure.
I was wondering if any of you science/creatively savvy people could think of a few basic and preferably natural ingredients, that are not harsh on skin, that could be mixed to make a body wash that did not dry out the skin but still cleaned it fairly well. It does not have to be powerfully antibacterial but rather able to pull dirt off etc.
I also want to avoid using Castile soap due to having to order it/the price. I have googled some recipes for body wash but so far I keep running into that castile soap made by that Dr.Bonner dude or whatever. Not interested in paying out the ass for a "health" soap if I can avoid it.
Maybe you should go to a dermatologist.

Contrary to popular myth, it isn't always the greatest thing to put on your skin. [chuckling]
