IPM for the Home Garden.

RE: IPM for the Home Garden.
I'm the wrong guy to ask that question of, we should have all been farmers..lol. In any case, yeah, actually, the glades is a heavy layer of vegetation in the vertical that rests on a thin layer of silt over 55-80 inches (minimum) of sand. The stagnant water raises the ph and all the little creatures in that water fertilize the upper layers to get the grasses growing. Then, all of this fertilizer goes through the sand like a faucet so fast that deep rooted trees are pretty much nonexistent. Instead, they spread out wide (like most plants in the glades, wide and shallow) to maximize their water capture. Constant storms and fires add another layer to the fertilization (the shallow rooted trees don't stand up to wind very well). That's what makes it such a fragile place, you kill one part of it and it loses fertility, because there isn't any fertility underneath...everything is happening topside. You know we actually have Aussie invasives completely destroying the place atm. You bastards!

I haven't been following the vineyards here. It's not really that time of year for us though. Few more weeks and there will be a small crop, then we wait until fall for the heavy bits.

(No worries about "telling me what I can do with my soil", you don't have to be here to know how to handle sand. Some things work well in sandy soils (or soils completely comprised of sand). I'm always looking for insights, things I haven't tried, research I haven't read, cultural practices that are unfamiliar to me, increases my cred when I go pumping small farmers for cash in return for advice, being able to blather on about farmers here or there, and how they do what they do (and why))
Trying to find you a picture I took Kichi, in 2006, the wife (then gf) and I were driving down to the keys when the glades were alight, both sides of Alligator alley, massive columns of fire, heat, and smoke, lasted for days. They shut the road down just after we got across. Gorgeous and terrible all at once. This will have to do for now..my picture is better, the wife will know where it is.
