Given the way catholics treat children these days it is even more creepy.

Unfortunately, they haven't changed how they treat children. In fact, I believe they are treating them far better than they did a generation or two ago, and far better than they did a few centuries ago. It's simply that people are talking about it now, telling what happened to them and being believed, and news media is more efficient at telling us what is going on in another part of our own country or around the world, and the legal systems of many countries take a much dimmer view of child abuse now than they did in the past.

I've heard plenty of 1-on-1 statements of physical abuse and sexual abuse from priests and nuns - according to anyone currently over 50 who went to Catholic school as a child, the nuns especially were big into physical abuse of children. Stories of the Catholic orphanages 100 years ago are horrible!

Look up something about the Magdelene Laundries - especially in Ireland. Or about their "Industrial Schools". Or watch the documentary "Dear Daughter". Look on http://www.vaticancrimes.us/
