First image is my current desktop wallpaper for my laptop. It's Simon from Gurren Lagann. Second image is my work desktop which is a picture from a Pokemon skit I was a part of.

Linux for the win, my friend! I use kubuntu, but for some reason the latest version doesn't let me choose a different wallpaper for different desktops, and I'm not quite computer geek enough to do something about it. Anyway, I'm a lazy bum and couldn't be bothered getting an actual screenshot, so here's the closest image I could find in about 30 seconds of googling to what I have. It's Olympus Mons on Mars:

I used to have one of the Ghostship series pictures from George Grie as a background. While awesome to look at I went for a simpler desktop in the end.
this was the one I used to have:

Great picture ... doesn't quite work with widescreen though which is a shame. Ace ... another great picture. Is it available in widescreen and if so where from? I'm really glad someone copied that feature to windows. I'm so dependant on it I get really stressed if its absent. my desktop: http://store.mintspad.com/images/cluttered_desktop.png I doubt many of you are interested in seeing the default fedora wallpaper (bland as it is) so I chose not to tidy it up.

That's the point ... it DOESN'T come with it by default, a distro might do (usually does), Linux doesn't! IOW Adrian, a Linux based distro can be anything because it's "just" a collection of programs, Windows simply offers the option to add the program so what's the biggy? It's also worth pointing out that a Windows supplier could choose to add program (possibly that one) to a pre-supplied build or even a customized build on CD or DVD (it's really easy ... I can do it no sweat) and that could be considered the equivalent of a Linux based distro. Plus there are UNIX "distro's" that do the same ... but as is frequently pointed out by various people Linux is not UNIX yet it looks (and can act) much the same so having that program included isn't a specific feature of Linux is it (it's actually an open-source thing)? I think we were actually talking about Linux as an operating system, not as just a kernel. That should have been obvious.
In fact, I said Gnome came with it by default (which is true). Gnome is a desktop manager that is used by various Linux distributions. I suspect KDE and xfce also have multiple desktop features by default to. Anyway, why are you arguing my point? I already said I suspect Windows will put it in at a later date. The reason why it should be a default feature is because the OS maker can program it to work with the OS properly, so it is perfectly inbuilt rather than an external program. This is especially a good idea for Windows since it is closed source. I'd much prefer a version of Windows with this as an inbuilt feature rather than a version of Windows and a program that just sits on top and does it. Oh, and as for your "a Linux based system can be anything because it's "just" a collection of programs", surely the same can be said of any OS? At the end of the day, an OS is a load of programs working together, including Windows. |
