Illegal downloading

I don't know how Europe is with their recording laws and Radio, but it was always told here in the U.S. that is was just as illegal to record from the radio, as it was, to record from one VHS or DVD to another....

It just was never really reinforced...

Yeah, but radio is free for the consumer, and it is still legal to record off the radio? Same with TV?

I don't know how it is in the UK/US but here in the Netherlands TV and radio is not free, you pay a license for it. And you pay a fee for blank CD's/DVD's/Tapes.

Radio and later TV licences were required in most Commonwealth countries from the 1920's until the 1970's.


As far as I'm aware,it is not now and has never been legal to record programmes from radio or TV in most countries. (Communist countries have never recognised copyright or intellectual property rights of any kind, although the PRC currently pretends to).

The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (also referred to as just the Berne Convention) requires protection for all creative works in a fixed medium be automatic, and last for at least 50 years after the author's death for any work except for photographic and cinematographic works. Photographic works are tied to a minimum of 25 years. Cinematographic works are protected for 50 years after first showing, or 50 years after creation if it hasn't been shown within 50 years after the creation. The Berne Covnention also allows for the rule of the shorter term, stating that "unless the legislation of that country otherwise provides, the term shall not exceed the term fixed in the country of origin of the work". Not all countries have applied this rule however.
