What if he realized what an organized religion that taught good morals (based on his time period) could do to a society that needed improvement and hope? Perhaps he decided that he would sacrifice himself in hopes that what he taught appealed to people and that it would help society improve. Maybe he never meant for it to stick around for so long or for people to take it so seriously but rather have it be a reason to become better people.

What if Jesus was an atheist?

I aint waiting for some santa claus daddy from the sky to save me
Theism is the belief in a god or gods. Presumably Jesus absolutely knew that there was a god thus rendering belief meaningless.
As Jesus did not believe in God his position cannot satisfy the term 'theist'. Anyone who is not a theist must be the opposite and the term for that is atheist. So, Jesus was an atheist as he had no belief or faith in the existence of a god or gods. ![]()
Well, considering that we know so little (if anything) about the authentic Jesus (supposing he existed), I'm afraid it's an impossible to answer question.
Other relevant questions one might ask about Jesus: What if Jesus was a llama? What if Jesus was an alien? What if Jesus was a rodeo clown? What if Jesus was a Terminator? What if Jesus was a submarine captain? What if Jesus was a student driver instructor? What if Jesus was leaping tall pyramids in a single bound? etc.
My ignore list
"The lord doesn't work in mysterious ways, but in ways that are indistinguishable from his nonexistence." -- George Yorgo Veenhuyzen quoted by John W. Loftus in The End of Christianity (p. 103). If he existed, and if he thought that, then he's a douche. Anyone who thinks the crusades, the spanish inquisition, the thousands of years of slaughter and death, the discrimination, the control of personal freedoms, the having to go to church on sunday etc that comes from religion, is somehow good. They need their fucking head checked. I think we know enough to know it was exceedingly unlikely that the low class, almost certainly illiterate Jesus could have been worldly enough, intelligent enough to penetrate the soup of fractionated superstitionsrunning through the Jewish world at the time. He was almost certainly a Jew who in his mind wholly embraced Judism, and seeking answers from what seemed to him to have been the framework of Judism.

It changes nothing. |
