"A Time for Action"

"A Time for Action"
"Earlier this year, Indonesian civil servant Alexander Aan posted on Facebook that he doubted the existence of God. He was then attacked and beaten by an angry mob, and arrested for blasphemy. On June 14, Aan was convicted of “disseminating information aimed at inciting religious hatred or hostility,” sentenced to 30 months in prison, and saddled with a large fine. Now many Indonesians are calling for his death. By punishing Aan, Indonesia is violating its obligations to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees every person the rights to freedom of belief and expression." - Extract from petition (link below).

I'm not really the sort of person who spreads the word of (or signs, for that matter) petitions. I spotted this in my feed on YouTube and thought I'd share it with you guys. I'm not advocating action since I know so little about it at this stage. I figure you're all big boys and girls and can decide whether or not you want to take action.

The video:

A link to the petition:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitio...n=shorturl

It is petitioning the US government, but a comment on YouTube seemed to indicate that non-US citizens can sign it too. In response to the US acting as "world police" and the suggestion that "[the] ones we should be contacting should be the UN" the original uploader stated: "And if no participating nation brings this to the attention of the UN, and supports the movement, do you think they'll act? Nobody is suggesting that America should act as the world's police. But as an American, my best chances for success are with my own government."
I don't know if that's accurate, just thought I'd throw it in.

According to my "Your Latest Threads" section in my CP, my last four threads have been called:
  • Finally, proof there is no god!
  • Ignoratio Elenchi - The Irrelevant Conclusion
  • Criticism of study showing negative outcomes for children of gay parents
  • Bill Hicks on Marketing

Conclusion: you watch weird porn. (not that that's a bad thing Big Grin)

Well, if you're American you can sign the petition. As stated above you may be able to sign it even if you're not a US citizen, but I don't know whether a) that's possible or b) if it is, whether or not it would be counted. Spreading the message of the video / petition to other people and websites would also probably help. Maybe non-US citizens could even start their own country's petition or petition the UN, but I don't know how that works.
