My vorpal blade goes snicker snack!
Hey all,

I've been lurking in this forum for a bit and would like to join the conversation. I'm a business major from the US and A living in the Portland Metro area. I work for Intel and after I set my machines a measurin' I surf the internets looking for entertainment. They don't allow porn at work so I cruise forums. I am currently a member of a swingdance forum, a kiteboard forum, a WOW forum (although not much activity from me because I quit playing), and now this forum.

I came here to see what kind of struggles face the atheist and hopefully find answers to questions I never thought to ask, like, for example, how well correlated the population of homosexuals are with the atheist population. I'm certainly going to post on the money thread because I've learned a bit about it, being a business major, and there are some concepts missing in the thread.

I've vacillated between Christian (Nazarene) and agnostic many times and was finally able to wriggle from my theist cacoon through http://www.godisimaginary.com. Ok, maybe not the best source of information and mostly a mish mash of repeated truths but it did help crack the hypnotic effects of my studies of God and gods.

So, poof, Atheist, YAY! wait how do I decide right from wrong? Meaningless concepts! No valuable concepts when viewed subjectivley. Critical thiniking 101 - Utilitarianism yay John Stuart Mill.

These forums have a weird effect on me and make me sensitive to the theism around me. I have always been a proponent of vigilance though so I am going to call it a good thing.

Hi Rhizo,

Welcome to the forum.

In the end it doesn't matter what finally "breaks the spell". Some come to the conclusion by thinking it out for themselves, some by watching utter bollocks like "Zeitgeist", some just turned away from the religion they were brought up in when they enter college and meet people of other religions.

Anyhow, I look forward to your messages and I hope you enjoy your stay.
Best regards,
Leo van Miert

Awww thanks,

It was a long road for me and I spent a while in the Deist camp because at least I could tell people I believed in God (very comforting to most because that means I am just a stones throw away from joining the religulous again). It wasn't a pretention so much as the only one that made sense when I viewed the chaos of the world.

I still hate to see the pain on people's faces when I say that I think god is imaginary. That statement cuts through a lot of BS and snaps clear focus on the one thing that most people think from time to time... that it's all in the head.

Frodo, that's hardly surprising given the hold religion has historically held over our society (and worldwide. ) Example- on my first day in infant school we were taught 2 things. To shut our eyes, hold our hands together and repeat the Lord's prayer. And to stand up for our national anthem requesting " God save the Queen ". Thus the individual is caught in the trap of God and Royalty worship.
It can take a long time to escape that, luckily I did, and I am now both atheist and republican.
HuhA man is born to a virgin mother, lives, dies, comes alive again and then disappears into the clouds to become his Dad. How likely is that?

Blimey! I don't remember singing the national anthem at school, and we never prayed. I don't remember there being any Christians. Hindu's, Jews sure.

Yes to a certain extent. I dispute the assertion that religion has really been that prevalent in the past 40 years. It's not been popular since at least the 60's in the developed world surely?
