Growing Orthodox influence in Russia

Both the EU and USA have protested at the excessive sentences inflicted on the girls of Pussy Riot, for the protest they made against the Orthodox churches support for Putin and the Russian 'Mafiachy'. I have heard that the Orthodox church called for excessive sentences, and it seems the Russian legal system have delivered. Is this the sign that the Orthodox church is getting near to its traditional role of being the state Religion of Russia. You can see here again church and state going hand in hand, and away from free speech?

I have no doubt the Orthordox chruch in Russian is re-assuming precisely the same and only role it has ever played in Russia - tool and shield of secular despotism. Putin is merely sharpening his tool and giving it the aura of menace it requires to intimidate the enemies of the Romanovs, uh, I meant Vlad the ex-KGB colonel.
I think the notion that the emergent economies of the world is to be called BRIC is rediculous. Russia in 50 years would be at essentially the same place as she had been on the even of Russo-Japanese war in 1905. There may be other letters added to BRIC, but the R well definitely disappear.

It seems that they've gone too far. Protest the Orthodox, sure, but a flash mob in a cathedral that directly accosts Putin and the Virgin Mary is too far.
However, I really don't know as much as I'd like about Russia's legal system. "Checks and Balances" seem to have no place, seeing as Mr. Putin himself wrote the verdict.
I do support the, ahem, "Pussy Riots," in their mission for expressional freedom, but they have gone a bit far past subtle. (Raised some "pro-Pussy Riot" eyebrows, though. Kudos for that.)

Freedom of religion is guaranteed in the Russian Constitution. Like here, actually having it still depends on people being willing and allowed to fight for it.

Freedom of religion is a vague term without any generally accepted or adjudicatable definition. It sounds good - as it should not, but it means nothing.

Sadly, what the constitution dictates means nearly nothing anymore.

chuck I am not sure what you mean BRIC with the R removed, BIC, why would they be like a ball point pen? Actually I don't think that is what you meant at all. Are you dyslexic like me? If you are welcome to the club. Although dyslexia is seen as a disability I have found that the way of perceiving things that goes with it gives me some tremendous advantages.
On Pussy Riot, I did post up on another thread their video of the protest. All the posts that came back were from people who hated their music so much nothing was mentioned about the reason for the protest at all. So this time I did not inflict their music on you all.

BRIC refers to Brazil, Russia, India and China. The term was coined by Goldman Saches and refers to the 4 developing nations commonly regarded as having the greatest potential to become very rich and powerful in the next 50 years.
I think Russia is a very awkward fit in this club, and will likely not only fail to gain much in relative status and wealth in the next 50 years, but will instead decay into a chronic sick man of Europe with a chronically exaggerated notion of its own strength and importance like Czarist Russia was at the turn of 1900.
So I think the real emergent economies that would reorder the world would be BIC, without Russia.

Sorry I was a bit dense there yes I think you are right. but I think India has huge problems with corruption that could well inhibit its growth.
