The GOPs Senate nominee in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin, is fluent in wacked-out crazy:

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Of course, he is running as a republicunt.

This sort of shit is nothing new. Google Fay Boozman and the phrase "God's little protective shield" to see another one that made the rounds before.

“As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society, and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.”

I'm sure that will be convincing enough for the majority of the dickheads who call themselves republicans or conservatives.

The author of this is clearly in it for the shock value. Part of the reason you shock someone with your opinion is to change their minds, but when you frame your argument in terms that completely invalidate the other person's right to respond to you, you're doing that because you want to antagonize them and display their opinions with greater visibility and negativity. So, by her own criteria, she supports rape.

I can't properly express my disdain for the 'I misspoke so all is well' canard. When it's invoked, I quickly envision myself being the declic operator during Marie Antoinette's demise (I invoke Antoinette memetically; not historically).

This bit of bullshit is rolled out by politicians of all stripes when caught in a blatant lie, such as the time Hillary used it to retract her bullet dodging experience on a Bosnian tarmac, or as in this case when a politician bares his true soul (sole might be more appropriate) only to realize the consequences of his self-betrayal. What they are all really saying is that it doesn't matter what they do, we plebians should mind our place and forget the matter.
