Atheism +

RE: Atheism +
Summer, I think people who say the "geeks with no social skills" make "skeptics" (I have to use freaking quotes because people again went and took a perfectly explanatory term and turned it into a group label) look like misogynists are idiots. Geeks with no social skills are awkward, if anything, but they certainly don't come off as misogynists. The problem is that stupid elitist women who don't necessarily like geeks think their personal lack of attraction to them makes them creepy, so they can say something like, "Hey, want me to hail you a cab" and said elitists bitches hear, "You clearly can't hail your own cab and I'm thinking about shoving you in the back of this cab and date raping you."

To be fair, we're all kind of guilty of that in some way or another. We are just more receptive of people who we are attracted to.

Also, I'm taking back the word skeptic. I find it highly annoying that it has been kidnapped to the point of having cutesy bastard children like "skepchick." Is there a "skepdick" as well? Someone kill me with a dictionary, please.

Fuck it. I couldn't help it and posted on the damn facebook page.

Quote:You only support women's rights? What about men's rights? Also, why are labeling social positions as if they have something to do with atheism? I don't mean to be sarcastic, well I do, but isn't this a bit like me starting a "movement" called A- and describing it as atheists who don't like milk? This is pretty much that pointless.

I'm egalitarian, so I agree that sexism operates in both ways - but if I tell them that they're being equally as sexist towards men, I'll get branded with the red "M" as fast as any man.

RW was much more famous in the skepticism community than in the atheist, but to sum up the rest of your post, the problem is that you can't be part of the skeptic community without expecting your particular ideology to come under question and she doesn't like it when feminism does.

However, I'd like to restate that you can't expect atheists to always be the rational ones or have the open minds - Joe Rogan is a famous atheist and he denies the moon landing. Seriously. The skeptics I'd have more of an expectation of rationality, and the social awkwardness is definitely a part of it. The skepchicks would argue that what they're doing IS education, and in intelligent, meaningful and calm discourse it is.

But the problem is you can't have meaningful discussion with a group which puts out naked calendars and then says you're not allowed to objectify women.

Many good people have come under fire from these bitches - I'm personally friends with Ben Radford, who is the sweetest Skeptic you'll ever meet, who loves women and actively encourages them in every way possible, and he was attacked for, dun dun DUN, being skeptical of that stupid little "Riley" video where the girl was complaining about the color pink. Brian Dunning was also attacked for several different little things, and DJ Groethe got himself mixed up with them as well - before Elevatorgate.

And Shell, I agree with you - except about the Skeptic part. Skepchick, part yeah, but Skeptic pretty much sums up a way of treating the world. The problem is these wackos don't deserve it.

RE: Atheism +
Skeptic means a person who is inherently skeptical. I'm sorry, but now I can't tell if a person is inherently skeptical or part of some self-defined movement of people who found it necessary to label themselves as "Skeptics" and add a few new connotations to an existing, perfectly good, word. No offense to capital S skeptics, but it just seems silly to me. All of these movements, groups and blog armies are enough to make one wonder when these "movements" will actually move to do anything more than type some stuff and have meetups where they talk about how skepticky, freethoughty or manhatey they are. Sorry. I'm just a little tired of the "My movement is about" blah, blah, blah crap that is seriously everywhere. I'm a Diner. That's different than a diner because I live it, baby. Hehe. Sorry. Glad I got that off my chest. Now I can go back to just skimming the blog movement posts.

Reading their shit is the fastest way to burn out.

And we give labels to everything - we can't help if people hijack the name. That's why I said they can marginalize themselves all they want.

Well, yes, we give labels to things and even groups of people. What's obnoxious is when a group tries to monopolize a label that already has a meaning. Like Skeptics and this Atheism+ shit, which seems to be catching on like wearing underwear outside of pants. They can do whatever they want. It's just stupid. I'm a skeptic and not part of any movement, so I will have to clarify that until that fizzles out. I'm an atheist, but not a moral soldier, so I suppose I might have to clarify that if enough idiots take up this poor me girl's mantle.

It's so fucking arbitrary. Each person has their own individual set of expectations. Idiots.
