The International Humanist and Ethical Union addressed the issue of states that condone faith-based violence should not be allowed to sit on the UN's Human Rights Council.

Good for them, too bad it probably won't happen.

Did they give any names?

Of who? Who is on the Human Right's Council? Who wrote the statement on behalf of the IHEU? Clarification is needed....

I think we might be moving into a new era where we are going to have to re-imagine the UN, like after WWII when we recreated the League of Nations to form the UN. Global climate change is going to push that envelope in my humble opinion. After all, we're all stuck on this one hunk of rock.

Just the suggestion of that is going to make a few million Jesus people wet their pants. I can't count how many I know of that are terrified that the UN is some kind of one world government from the book of revelations.

That being said, I think some kind of global government is needed and the UN can do it, but they're going to need to make some serious changes. With how globalized the world has become, we can't rely on local governments to handle everything anymore.

how could you possibly have a world government? Why would we consent to be governmend by teh decisions of dictatorships and corruptocracies?

The third world would just vote themselves money and their leaders would pocket it

Agreed, there's a lot of problems surrounding a UN with teeth... But global climate change is going to kick all of our asses, it might prove to be a big motivator... Who knows what the future will bring?? Not I, but if I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream big.

The powers of the world kicked the ball away at the latest climate change conference after it was shown that Scientists had comprehensively lied.

Of the States, I mean. Under that context, the US ought not to sit in the UN human rights council.

Well, there is the technical separation of church and state in the US, as well as protected free-speech. But since you haven't opened the link, here's a sample of the text:

Faith-based violence is a continuing scourge in many parts of the world. In Nigeria[1], Algeria[2], Sudan[3], Libya[4], Egypt[5]and Mali[6] armed groups with religious agendas are perpetrating widespread human rights abuses with impunity. They attack, kill, maim, mutilate or rape anyone perceived or imagined to be opposed to their particular religious cause.

Faith-based violence by state and non-state actors also persist in Indonesia[7], Iran[8], Pakistan[9], India[10], and Saudi Arabia[11]. And victims are often unable to seek redress in the courts because of entrenched religious privilege, and the lack of separation of religion and state.

I agree the US's human rights abuses should also exclude them from the council, however this piece is directly related to faith based violence against other religious groups and non-believers.
