are they really like this?
Because I'd like something other than a "go make your own fucking brownies".
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

My mother's side of the family are almost all Mormon. They always seemed pretty normal to me.
Maybe they do weird fucking shit in private? Who knows.

My boyfriend comes from a fundamentalist Mormon family. He's also a transman, so he's been on the receiving end of a lot of misogyny; the church not only condones it, but tells them it's a good thing. Women are pretty much told they have to go out, get married, have lots of kids and dedicate their entire life towards their husband and children. Has anyone here seen or read Twilight? Stephanie Meyer is Mormon, too, and if you're semi-familiar with Mormon beliefs and culture, you can see a lot of its negative sexist influences in her work.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

My Mormon pal is the nicest guy anyone could wish to meet. Then he starts talking about Joseph. Then my ears fold over.

I didn't see any rebellion in the book or movie. Bella was just this weak, helpless little damsel in distress who was too emotional and stupid to make any good decisions on her own and always needed a man to rescue her and keep her safe. It's bullshit, it's misogyny and it's annoying. The women I've always found most interesting were the tough ones who, when things get tough, they stand up and get tough right back; Bella, when things get tough, she just crumples and does what other people tell her to do.

Heh. I used to be like that about religion in general, but when I started dating Lee, I started making an effort to learn what I could about Mormonism just so I could understand him and his history better. At very least I know it should help one of these days when/if I meet his family (I mean, I know better than to refer to temple garments as magical underwear).

Ah, but who was pushing the marriage idea and who just wanted to get their phreak on? I agree, the character wasn't entirely flattering to the fairer sex...but it was unmistakably lusty...hehehehe, and that...is a sort of power.

True, but Meyer also used a LOT of metaphor for sex in there. That's another thing about Mormons: they're a bunch of prudes, at least that's the public image they try to maintain.
Also, her desire to 'just get it on' was likely intended to be another sign of women being overly controlled by emotions and not able to make good decisions on their own.
I'm the last person who sees misogyny under every rock, but in the case of fundamentalist religious groups, you usually WILL find misogyny under every rock. And on top of the rock. And next to the rock. And even the rock itself will be made from misogyny. Yes, I know, it's stupid, but this just scratches the surface of some of the really stupid things they believe.
