I think there are two reasons that atheists tend to be labeled as unpatriotic. The first is that many people associate atheism with socialism or communism, two of the dirtiest words in the U.S. The second is that many people believe the U.S. to be "God's country," so they conclude that the rejection of God must be an anti-American sentiment. I don't take it too personally, because our country is filled with fucking idiots that think the earth is less than 10,000 years old.
And don't you know that "Support the Troops" can only mean supplying them with all the weapons needed to smite our enemies?

That I'm not entirely sure about. Perhaps it has something to do with Stalin's regime, or perhaps it's that atheism, socialsim, and communism are seen as anti-American, causing people to automatically link them together.

Most warmemorials to comemorate those who died in WW2 here in germany were built during the timeperiod between 1947 - 1955.
And during that time, fashists who had survived the war still had a bit of a say in the new parties, who`s members they now were.
So our memorials might not be plastered with religious symbols. But they look like a praising memorial to fashist germany. Wich can be very imbaressing when foreign friend come to visit.
on the subject. if i was ever to die in service or under any circumstances what so ever. as a atheist the last thing i ever want to lie beneath is a cross or cressent!
