Try not to be to hard on your dad. Maybe try reading Michael Shermer's Why People Believe Weird Things to get an idea of the reasons why he can't escape his way of thinking.

Thanks for the book recommendation, I'll definitely look it up. I think I have some idea of the thought processes leading to fearful and irrational thinking in this particular case, but I've never really studied the subject.

I'm not being very hard on him as I realize the emotions of contempt are out of proportion with respect to the importance of the issue. That's why I'm holding back from saying what I really think.
