It's a free country. If they want to spread a message of hate on their own dime, so be it. First, I'm a proponent of the view that the remedy for bad speech is more speech; putting these things out there means they will be discussed outside the hate kibbutzes. Second, I'm also confident in the forces of both progress and innate human morality; the more you push these messages as a necessary part of that religious viewpoint, the more people will move away from both embracing the message and the religious viewpoint.

I like this angle too though. Let the crazies show just how crazy they are! While the rest of the world progresses, they are busy being mean on a billboard.
The vandals took it one step further and did that community an even greater service imo. They got it on the evening news!

And when the crazies become the average because people like you tolerate it and even encourage it, what will you say then?

Letting dirty laundry air only works when it is criticized vigourously and without mercy.

Need I remind you of the alternate reality field exemplified by the Red States of America (who conveniently consume a majority of federal tax money) while pushing their destructive social and economic policy?

Gods, I hate my fellow liberals sometimes.

They thing "let a thousand flowers bloom" but forget said flowers often grow on unmitigated shit...

I feel more conservative these days, if only to recognize the atavistic (and successful!) political practices of the "other side".

Addendum:

I also think your rights to free speech end at trying to end/destroy/suppress other's rights.

For example:
If you're lobbying to kill gays, you lose the right to lobby in the public forum.

I share the German view of democracy, not the American "let my hate spew forth and you have to take it! HAHAHA!" view.
