I knew a marxist student group in Munich centerd around students in the Munich uni, in which almoust every member kept a "gulag list" for the purpose, that when they were "in power", the people on that list should be "reeducated". And yes they were all atheists - otherwise you would probably end up on the "gulag list".

Every group has their extreme branches; they only really get dangerous when the extreme has significant influence on the culture. I kinda wonder how the anti-capitalist extremists would compare to the pro-capitalist extremists we have to deal with here in the US. Thinking

I totally know where you're coming from. It's so easy to create and spread absolute trash and absurdity on the internet. I can start out watching some really great videos on YouTube, but I always end up watching a sadly ignorant person spouting off the handle.

However, I have to say, it can be really difficult trying to find a sense of appreciation for the wet writhing mass of human ignorance that is the Internet, but I ultimately love it. It takes some work, but you can find some real gems hidden amongst the pebbles. Ultimately the Internet is a great conglomeration of ideas and perspectives around the world. I think most of us have a romantic view of humanity and so people are let down by the "idiocracy" found online, but I just accept that some folks don't have much to contribute and appreciate the good stuff all the more.

And thank you for the welcome, Creed! I'm obviously new, but I'm already enjoying my time here.

I have a very clear set of mind when it comes to politics.
I listen! I am tolerant, I want to be convinced by the better argument, living in a republic I want to live up to the standards on which it was created and integrate them into my way of life.
This resulted in me being a very pragmatic person who doesn`t follow one specific ideology but who votes for what is the most rational and the most convincing without demonising my oponents.
And I like my "middle way".

I cannot stand extremists from any political fraktion, there is hardly anything I hate as much as a person who constantly tries to mold his ideology and convictions into a current political even with the intention of letting it appear as the perfect solution and thereby ignoring the effects it could have off the blue print within reality.
First off all a extremist to me, is a person who has lost the conection with reality and desperatly holds to delusions which in reality could have dangerous effects.

To me this contradicts the values represented in a republic, which is one of the main reason why approve of the banning of extremist groups and their exclusion from the democratic debate.

But I don't think he likes it if he even knows.

Are you seriously suggesting that raving lunatics should be prevented from holding office or engaging in political discourse? Hmmm. Thinking

I'm not sure we can eliminate the republican party that easily, though I appreciate the suggestion. Seriously though, as messy as it is, democracy is probably best served with full inclusion. China regularly disallows political participation on such grounds as you suggest but I don't think they do so very fairly. I don't trust that any authority could be trusted to make that determination without abusing its power.

RE: Atheists aren't always intelligent or reasonable or rational
The title of the thread is a "no duh", because atheism is not an issue of academics. "Atheist" merely describes a position on one issue. "Atheist" does not automatically make one good or bad, educated or uneducated. It is merely a word used to describe one's position.

Our species has always been a range of labels and degrees of education and has always been capable of rational and irrational behavior, NOT BECAUSE OF LABELS, but because we are, and have always been the same species as part of the same evolution.

"The New Atheism" by Victor Stenger, describes our common evolution in that human behavior is label independent.
