Planetary Demise

RE: Planetary Demise
I would rather do something and waste money and it turns out not to be happening, then do nothing and fuck over are only planet.

I agree. If we're going to error - lets error on the side of caution.

I would prefer that the governments of the world simply assume that we are causing global warming if it indeed causes them to spearhead significant environmental protection world wide.

Me personally ... I'd be completely fine with a far more simplified life if it meant that my son could enjoy a beautiful planet all his life without want or hunger.

Couldn't agree more Gooders, but it seems there are people out there who would rather risk destroying the world for our children just so they can ruin the planet that little bit more.

Exactly, half of the things we're doing to destroy the planet are not even essential, we just need to think a bit more about what we're doing before we do it, I feel sorry for the future generations.

I think humans are the best thing to ever happen to this planet, it's kind of bland and boring without overarching social constructs and civilization Tiger

It's only regrettable that it was the only species to achieve this level of sapience by this time... I mean, elephants aren't really that far off, and dolphins and octopi are just a few reasons short of taming the oceans... hell, even your closest primate cousins could very well be where you are in perhaps fewer than 50 million years.

Global warming... who cares? Tongue By the time it's really getting nasty, you'll be off this rock, and spreading through space like a slow plague Big Grin

Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

Wishful thinking, but I do appreciate your non-nonchalance. Tongue

Have not read the article in question but agree that there is ALOT of confusing information available.

From a country that has fluctuating cycles of wet, dry and fucking bloody hot it is very hard for me to 'buy into" AGW global warming.

Climate Change? Ahhh slightly different animal and yes the climate WILL change/ is changing. Does this involve a warming trend? - More than likely. As has been cited '..it has happened before and will happen again' And when all is said and done the Planet will still be here.... humans? - another story

...is that what I said? No.

Quote:ice caps melting how can you state that it is unsure it 'will be of any danger to us in the long run'?!?
In some geologic models, ice caps should fully melt at the end of an ice age. Rising sea levels might be a problem for people on the coasts, but I haven't seen any figure that indicate a devestating amount of land will be covered.

Climate change isn't something new. Go back several thousand years and the climate was very different to what it is today. Countless species have become extinct due to the perfectly normal climate change the Earth experiences. The beauty of evolution and nature is that when one species dies out, another almost always takes its place.

Emotionalism is not any help HOS. The planetary population HAS been working for the past 70 years to address climate change and pollution. We're lucky that many are now running around like chooks with their heads cut off - aka mainstream- and striving to actually DO something to reduce pollution. In the end though it is going to come down to overpopulation of the planet I am thinking.

The overwhelming consensus of scientist dedicated to studying climate change agree that it is real and man made. I was trained and worked as a scientist for ten years. So when someone suggested it wasn't true, I went to the journals, read a couple reputable books, and feel comfortable saying with 100 % confidence that it is true and man made. If you are not a scientist how would you judge? You might read this:

"I don't think there is conclusive evidence that it's caused by humans"

You have stated that there is not conclusive evidence that it is caused by humans, yet now you deny that you made that statement? I don't think it could be any clearer.

"Rising sea levels might be a problem for people on the coasts, but I haven't seen any figure that indicate a devestating amount of land will be covered".

You have also stated that there is no evidence it will be of any danger to us in the future, yet you've admitted that if the ice caps melt rising sea levels will be a problem, is this not contradictory? Do the people living on the coasts not matter?

You seem to have the attitude that it doesn't matter if a few animals or humans are effected by global warming, so long as it is only a miminal amount of people that are effected. Also you seem to use the fact that we've been effected by it in the past as an excuse to continue the process, the problem is not that climate change is occuring, the problem is that we're speeding up the process when we do not need to.
