No one was traumatized AFAIK. It was part of life, no more than turning the TV on.

My mom gave me a rabbit when I was 6, she told me, "You like stewed rabbit? Work for it! Grab its legs and smack it on the head." So I did and a nice stew it was.

I'd categorize myself as more of a city slicker than a country boy for sure. However, I did grow up in a small town with plenty of cow pastures and also many pets in the household around. I've never experience slaughter or any practical aspects of large or small scale animal farming first hand. Probably that's where my squeamishness comes from.

Come to think of it, there is this anecdote from my brother who used to play in a band. One time they had a deal with this farmer, they could practice in one of his barns or another and they would clean out the chicken "sheds" for him in return. In the front, the farmer had some chickens walking around in the field to please the city-slickers who came out of the city for some country life during the weekend and have some free-range eggs and coffee (or I don't know what), but in the back he had the worst kind of chicken battery operation going, all hidden.

Probably that's part of the reason I've grown so incredibly distrustful of people when it comes to animals. I apologize for being a dick about it sometimes, it really gets to me.

Hey no problem littleendian. I quite like your opinion here. Have you heard much of Peter Stringer? Someone posted an interview with Richard Dawkins. Great bloke.
