What is "DMT"?

It's a substance naturally occurring in the brain and body, and which has psychadelic properties as a drug.

The following is a good documentary on it, which is also available on Netflix and Amazon, though it's $2 to watch it here: . (There are similarly titled Youtube videos, but they appear to be "Ancient Aliens" type documentaries. This documents the drug and the results of a study done on the experiences of people on DMT.)

Wikipedia Wrote:N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT or N,N-DMT) is a psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family. Its presence is widespread throughout the plant kingdom. DMT occurs in trace amounts in mammals, including humans, where it putatively functions as a trace amine neurotransmitter/neuromodulator. It is originally derived from the essential amino acid tryptophan and ultimately produced by the enzyme INMT during normal metabolism. The significance of its widespread natural presence remains undetermined. Structurally, DMT is analogous to the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT), the hormone melatonin, and other psychedelic tryptamines, such as 5-MeO-DMT, bufotenin, psilocin and psilocybin.

When ingested, DMT acts as a psychedelic drug. Depending on the dose and method of administration, its subjective effects can range from short-lived milder psychedelic states to powerful immersive experiences; these are often described as a total loss of connection to conventional reality with the encounter of ineffable spiritual/alien realms. Indigenous Amazonian Amerindian cultures consume DMT as the primary psychoactive in ayahuasca, a shamanistic brew used for divinatory and healing purposes. Pharmacologically, ayahuasca combines DMT with an MAOI, an enzyme inhibitor that allows DMT to be orally active.

The fact that something occurs naturally does not mean that it is harmless. There are plenty of chemicals that occur naturally inside your body that if you injested, they would kill you. Try eating feces.

I've done a fair amount of psychedelics (including smoked DMT), with no harmful long term effects. I have nothing but great memories of my experiences.

You really seem to have this bad habit of projecting your experiences on other people, Your responses to "Small Census' thread is a perfect example.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Did it change your experience of "god" in any way? I mean not the definition in church or school, but the creation of nature and the universe and your position within that.

Do you believe in another quantum reality or parallel universe of some description? Anything that cannot be relatively objectively rationalised.

naimless, what is your intention for asking about DMT?
Are you looking to try it for yourself?

I'm unsure of how someone can remain an atheist after heavily experiencing DMT.

It's not necessarily that god becomes true, it's just common things like third eyes and snakes and aliens and time travel become real.

You have to let go of your ego and stop fighting your "angels" and "demons". You may turn into something else or jump to someone else's experience - a family member being hurt or so on. It can be hell, empathising with these things, but it releases euphoria afterwards.

Yes, I would rather experience it in depth than 10 years of psychotherapy. However, I would need to trust the shaman.

I don't understand this statement. What about 10 years of psychotherapy?

In many cultures the Ayahuasca experience is medicine - it doesn't have the negative stigma attached as it does in the criminalised west.

So in Washington a psychotherapist may recommend you manufactured pre-scripted meds to numb out anxiety and depression and insomnia or get over addiction of some form.

In Cali a psychotherapist may recommend you medicinal marijuana to alleviate the same issues.

In other places a psychotherapist may recommend you a trip to Peru to experience Ayahuasca.

Are you saying that you're crazy and that you wish to self-medicate?
