So today at work.
March 17, 2013 at 6:01 pm
Today is St Patrick's day, and I was not wearing green. My boss pointed this out and I responded "That's ok I am not superstitious anyway". He joked knowing I was an atheist and said "That's ok Jesus wasn't superstitious either" .
But I responded seriously, "If all it took was faith to make something true then the sun would really be a god".

Boy are you a fun one at parties.
All the atheists I know aren't loud assholes about it.
I usually smile at people knowingly.

I have the last of my green to smoke later... that counts as a St Paddy's day celebration, right?

Why is telling the truth being an asshole? Usually when I learn something new and true, I say thank you.
Oh and what was it Hitchens said " I hope I never accidentally offend anyone" Which means he had no compunction offending that which deserves being offended.
Now tell me why faith should not be offended? It isn't rooted in fact. It isn't rooted an any logical reason. It is merely wishful thinking. It would be like coddling an adult who still believed in Santa.
If it takes being an "asshole" to tell people the truth, then guilty as charged. I think the world is better off knowing the sun is a ball of gas, rather than a god that the Ancient Egyptians falsely believed for 3,000 years. If you think credulity and superstition are a good way to gain knowledge then I cant help you.

There is a massive difference between telling someone the truth about their religious beliefs, and being an asshole about it.

From my perspective, you were not being an asshole.

Really? With everything we know is said about us not to mention other minorities of other labels you are worried about me being an "asshole"?
Funny thing is he took it less seriously than you guys are now.
I'm sorry but I find it funny you guys trying to give me "advice" about people you don't know personally and I do. If any of my co workers thought I was that bad, I wouldn't be working there at all.
You call it being an "asshole", I call it interjecting food for thought. You guys are acting like I said "FUCK JESUS".
Seriously, is it ok to believe the sun is a god? If it isn't and it isn't then it requires much more than mere "faith" to make something true. Since when does telling the truth make one an "asshole"?
But if some here want to call me that, fine. Heard far worse from theists.

Thank you, and like I said I find it funny that the guy I said it to just heard me and went on . But I could tell he took pause at what I said, which means he was thinking about it, and that is what we need people to do, THINK not merely react.

Not serious in the context that I wanted to kill him or yadda yadda.....But serious in the context "yea I know you are joking, but have you thought of it this way".
