Quote:Edit: Yikes! I sincerely apologize for the horrible typos in the thread title :/

I thought you might have been drinking. Big Grin

But a world of debt is owed to muslim scholars who kept The Greco-Roman classics alive while the church was burning fucking libraries.

Of course, when al-Ghazzali came along to be the Jerry Falwell of islam and insist that believing in bullshit was more important than knowing stuff you did start on the long road down into the shitter.

C'est la vie.

Chalk the errors down to nervousness!

It's been something I've been reading up on now today.

My conjecture is that the Islamic civilization may have benefited from the works of many scientists that were kept alive during a period of growth and economic prosperity (which no doubt a relatively stable empire provided them). In other words, I no longer think that just because discoveries and developments happened during a time when Islam was the state religion of the empire, means that those developments ought to be attributed to Islam.

Also, if Muslim apologists continue to harp that just because *some* people within the Muslim world are fanatics and prone towards violence and archaic ways of living, then Islam isn't to blame - then if some scientists that managed to grow or sustain the field of science and save knowledge, then Islam wasn't the cause of that either Wink

Civilization always benefits when scientists call the shots and religious fuckwits are ignored.

I was to understand that it was the Persian scholars and not muslim that kept the knowledge of Greco-Roman discoveries alive during the dark ages.

A distinction which is irrelevant after the mid-7th century, Kichi. The Byzantines and Persians had chewed each other to bits leaving them easy targets for the Arabs. By 651 the Sassanid dynasty of Persia had been overrun and only sporadic local resistance remained. The question is, 'how "islamic" were the invaders.

Part of Robert Spencer's thesis is that it was the conquest of non-Arabic populations which caused the rulers to invent "Islam" as a unifying force for their empire....and idea which they shamelessly copied from the earlier actions of Constantine inventing xtianity.

So essentially islam has no reason to claim anything and is only a faint echo of what has gone before....like a desert wind.

So islam is just a brain fart?

If you actually read Al-Ghazali's works you can see that he did not advise against science but instead taught that Muslims should value it.

How works are accessible reads and "Deliverance from Error" is great place to start.

Likewise he is accused of rejecting Greek philosophy but as you can see in the Stanford encyclopaedia of philosophy - this is another misrepresentation.

I only say this as I have actually read his works and not trusted the erroneous sources that have unfortunately deceived so many here too.

Faith in anti-religious sources is suspected though I suppose... but a realistic view will win out in sincere company.
