Is there one?

I, for the most part, have a principle of live and let live. If there should be a mission of sorts, then it's to giving a response to theism, and then only in the case of being challenged.

I can't stand atheistic activism or "atheist proselytizing" which I like to call it, because it seems so reactionary. Most people I think, atheist or theist, don't care for the most part and have a pretty balanced outlook on how to behave. So, most people don't interfere too much with one another.

If you want to be an activist, don't use the banner of atheism, because atheism is just one statement - sure an important one - but it's just one defining position. Instead use some positive message or ideology; like Humanism or something.

I'm here cause I saw a presentation by Sam Harris, actually two one on Free Will and one given at a Celebration of Reason event, I found both very intriguing, so I started looking for something like this. So far I really like it here (but its only my second day Wink) because the signal-to-noise ratio is quite good for the interwebs Big Grin

Welcome aboard.

Feel free to create an introduction, so we can learn a little about you.

I've not even been here a full month, but it feels like I've been here quite some time. I feel quite at home here. Which is a good thing because around these parts folks aren't interested (at best) or are downright hostile (at worst) to atheism. I really needed a good place to hang out with like-minded people and discuss things that are on my mind. Or just hang out and read. To a very large extent I came here to learn. This site does well in that regard. I've already learned some good stuff here and I'm quite sure that I will learn a lot more. I am very happy that we've a fair number of religious believers who are active as it would be not nearly as interesting without them.

I like Sam Harris, but not nearly as much as the work of Richard Dawkins, and especially Christopher Hitchens. I really miss Hitch. I much enjoyed his reportage in Slate and elsewhere as well as his books. And I have to agree with the man - religion truly does poison everything. I don't care what any person believes, so far as they leave everyone else alone. The problem is that so many of them just will not do that, and here in the US we see the results every damn day.

Can't we ever just get along?

What's wrong with that? I'm sure he's inspiring plenty of people to ask for more intelligent discussions Clap
