It is rather embarrassing...sometimes I'll pull it out to freak out people who have never seen it before. There is something ritualistic about babbling incoherently (with confidence) that appears really creepy if you're not expecting it.
Actually, it's one of the few phenomena about Christianity that I can't really explain. My best guess, from a materialist viewpoint and having no training in neurology to speak of, is that it's a response to social pressure. You're at Christian summer camp surrounded by people who can all do it when suddenly *BAM* the "spirit of the Lord" comes upon you and you can suddenly do the same thing. Which is funny...since that spirit, if it did exist, obviously still grants me the power to do it even though I no longer believe in it. It must be some kind of mental "switch" or something, because everyone who I've seen that wants to do it, eventually became able to do it. And you can't un-learn it. Oh, the oddities of fundamentalism. Also, KichigaiNeko, I love your Discworld reference. Also, I was active duty for 5 years and worked on radar. Sure are a lot of interesting people on here! I'm a bit NW of Phoenix. We drove out Route 8 one time to San Diego. I thought Yuma was a nice pit stop....at least the toilets flushed in Denny's.
It is hard to explain Route 8 to non- Arizonans. Picture a 4 lane road with a median, a string of utility poles running alongside and a set of rail road tracks right next to it. AND NOTHING ELSE! Seriously. You could walk 10 yards north or south of the highway and shoot a dinosaur movie with no fear of seeing anything man-made in your shot. Desolation? Thou art Route 8.

The irony of your new found belief, and that being (anti)-theism, opposed to your forsaken fundamentalist evangelical conservative Christian beliefs, and this irony being, these beliefs both share one resounding factor and that is to REBEL , RESIST or REVOLT , which is not unexpected given that "christiandom" teaches total contradiction to what the scriptures teach ! Understand as you have bean rebelling against the scriptures, and know you choose to rebel against God. The truth of this matter is weather you believe in God or not, your position has not changed as much as you think.
