It wouldn't surprise me if lamb (or no meat) was the original recipe...but this is A-Mur-iKah - so we added the moo.

I think you meant "hasn't lamb or mutton". I've had shepherd's pie that was quite good, and 50/50 lamb/beef. Perhaps the shepherd brokered a deal with a cowherd?

Perhaps. We in the US have been known to misappropriate many an English phrase for our own purposes.
We're also somewhat hobbled by the relative lack of availability of lamb, at least in these parts. The stuff is hard to find, and expensive. I, for good or ill, am addicted to the stuff.

Oh it's so damned good! Marinate those chops in some tzatziki over night........then grill it slow and indirect. If lambs valued their life, they'd work to be a hell of alot less tasty to me. I clearly can't handle my shit around them. It approaches the pork plateau of culinary desire for me..

I feel the same way about pigs.
I live in the land of pork barbecue. Anyone who's never had a proper NC pulled pork sandwich hasn't lived. That does include the vegans.

The holy grail in FL is the banana leaf pit roast (whole pig). Stoke the coals, wrap it in leaves, then bury that fucker in the beach sand and drink beer while oogling the females over it's hellish grave. Real good for tourist season btw, keeps the toe-sies warm in the jan/feb sand (and that's when all the tourists come by lookin for some strange anyway)
