Like you said, it would really only appeal to somebody that is already a believer. Making an appeal to authority be the sole means of conveying an argument is worthless when the opposing side doesn't consider the authority legitimate in the first place.

Because I do not think the point of the pamphlet was to make an argument, it was merely a rather poorly stated version of the gospel.

If it's not an argument, then why make pamphlets like that in the first place? Obviously they're being used to proselytize and try to win converts, but it hardly looks like it would convince anyone who didn't already believe. You'd be better off trying to use Pascal's Wager.

Because there’s no need for an argument in that situation, if the person is supposed to believe they eventually will. Most of what people believe is not based upon argumentation anyways. It was simply a pamphlet produced for informative purposes, I do not agree with a lot of what it says but I realize what it was intended for.
