What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
Scrubbing a carbon steel skillet with a copper scrubber. I bought this skillet ages ago, but never got around to preparing it for use. As a result of being exposed to the elements without seasoning, a few minor rust spots developed, but I was able to mostly polish those out with the scrubber. It still needs to be seasoned, but at least the manufacturer coating is removed now, or mostly. I've got some good quality seasoning oil somewhere, but I'll probably just use lard, as I have no idea where that oil has gotten itself off to.

Pulling my 5-quart stainless steel "jumbo cooker" That I bought at Aldi a year or so back. I was going to donate it to Goodwill, but in hindsight, it's a much better pan than I remember it being. At the time, I didn't know how to cook with stainless steel, and so I was disappointed with how everything seemed to stick to it. The fault was my ignorance of how to cook with it. A goodly amount of scrubbing with Barkeeper's Friend, and it's almost as good as new. There are a couple of pits on the inside, but other than that, it's in great shape. I think I'll keep it. It is rather large for my purposes, so I don't know what I'll use it for, but I could see using it to cook a whole chicken or a large roast. I have no idea whether it's oven-safe to 400 degrees, but I suspect it is, as it's fairly well-made for such a cheap pan.

Speaking of which, I ran across my 11-inch nonstick skillet from Aldi. It's got a disc on the bottom, so it doesn't move around like a lighter skillet, but the handle is just a curved piece of sheet steel. It's so uncomfortable that I'm not sure that I'd wish it on my worst enemy. Still, I suppose I'll donate it. Let it be somebody else's headache.

I just stabbed myself. Sort of. I was wrestling to get the last of my leftover pot roast out of the food storage container when I knocked a steak knife sitting nearby off the table. It landed point down on the top of my foot. I bled like the proverbial stuck pig for several minutes.

This sounds like one of my signature moves.

In Phoenix, sitting at the to gate in a 737 that I boarded nearly 2 hours ago. Supposedly a paperwork mishap.

Oh, finally, they're talking about maybe pushing back.

Thinking about buying a saucier and learning to make sauces. You know that saying: good, cheap, fast -- pick two -- it's kind of like that. A decent fully clad saucier runs at least $100. I found a sauce pan that's fully clad, and the edges are rounded, but they're only slightly rounded and so it's not really ideal for sauce making. Cuisinart has an inexpensive saucier, but it's not fully clad and so there will be a considerable temperature difference between the bottom and sides of the pan. That being said, it has a much better shape for making sauces. That may be the place to start as it's cheapest and if I find the pan useful, then I can spend the money on a good one.

I picked up a Henckel's 6" utility knife for $12. I've lacked a decent utility knife and this is a fair midpoint between the 8" Chef's knife and my 3" paring knife. I would have preferred 5" but their 5" utility knife was serrated. Other options were considerably more expensive. Alas, I decided to return it given the length and the mediocre reviews. Surprise, Amazon says I can keep it. I didn't expect that!

Quote:Unfortunately, the Twins will be attempting their playoff push without their three highest-paid players for a big chunk of the remaining schedule.

Max Kepler was placed on the injured list Thursday with lingering left knee soreness that had kept him out of the lineup for seven of the previous 10 games. He joins fellow veteran core players and middle-of-the-lineup hitters Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton on the shelf, and that trio accounts for nearly half ($59 million) of the team’s $129 million payroll.
