Confused Fall

Where were you visiting, Boru?

I agree with Jacob here, anyplace that can raise a Rush Limbaugh who has millions of viewers, is a highly dangerous and volatile place.

That's why I'm leaving Tongue
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

How long do you have?

The nation which invents McDonald's and then lawyers who sue them for making people fat. Who produce some of the best and brightest minds I know... And Rush Limbaugh. Who happily go to war in Gods name then completely flip their shit at the threat of nationalised healthcare. Where a substantial number of people think the solution to gun crime is more guns, where nobody actually follows the 10 commandments but people get hysterical if you don't have them on the wall. Where the unborn are precious, then no one gives a shit til they're old enough for the army, then they're precious for a bit again, then get discharged. Where the opposition party can shut down the government. Where there is a wall of separation between Church and state but it's still called one nation under God.

It's a bit like in mib. A person is intelligent. People are dumb panicy animals. An American is lovely. Americans are scary as shit.

Sorry. Probably just me.

WOW.
That's a lot to bite into.
Maybe we can chew on it in another thread.

I generally dislike that sort of anti-'country' characterization.
It seems pretty unreasonable.

I like this theist even though it makes no sense to me at all to follow a leader who (maybe) lived along time ago, who happens to be a ghost of some kind with no real records, except for the Bible, yet this person does not really believe the Bible, except for parts, because cherry picking. Still, I like you.

What is it with the clowns? You know, I was afraid of clowns for years. I had a bad, bad, bad experience with one as a child. I decided to get over it by filling a room in my home with clowns. Literally.

This is just a taste:

As you can see, the furniture is dusty. I hardly go in that room. But, I can see a clown begging for money in the street and I don't cry. I close my window, but I don't cry. Big Grin

Welcome, smooth buns. Stick around. Don't go anywhere. Big Grin

I'm not a big fan of America as a country.

Actually, here's my analogy...

America is the fat, lazy, NOSY neighbor that just won't mind their own business.

I live here because I'm still trying to escape.

And welcome, theist! Use your reason here, and stay calm and I think you will go far....

If you like. Although it's not really why I'm here... Please note I said afraid, not anti Wink. I'm also terrified of North Korea and Iran, that doesn't mean I'm anti them.

Americans for me represent a paradox. I don't understand it. So I fear it.

And of course I'm unreasonable. I'm a theist! Duh! Wink One of the many perks!

It's not just you. I think the USA has a unique situation in that it gets considerable press and attention abroad, but our own attention is also focused inward, and so we suffer from a form of social myopia (it's no accident that people feel as if Americans think they're the center of the universe; our environment encourages just that attitude). That, combined with good things like a lot of freedom and a lot of diversity, guarantees that the crazier/dumber/sadder elements will stand out. And we are not short of crazy, dumb, and sad elements in a nation of 300 million+ people.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

There's also the fact that we're a large country that only borders two others. Most Americans haven't been out of the country and have no idea what the rest of the world is like, nor do they care to know.

I was born and raised in the U.S., and I still don't understand Americans. We're an enigma wrapped in contradictions.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
