My roommate and friends couldn't convince me to go to the hospital. By the time I did go to the hospital, had I not been treated, I surely would have died - and I say that without a hint of exaggeration.

Made the norovirus look like a walk in the park.
Oh yes, pleurisy is a joy. Not an uncommon sequellae.

On the other hand, I had a sore arm for hours after my flu jab!

YES! Pity me!

And no, if someone had dropped any sum of money on the sidewalk, I wouldn't have fetched it. It was likely the worst I've ever felt.

That said, now that I've done more research and read some of your stories, I probably will get the shot this year. I think when I got the flu it must have been a rogue strain or something.
As I said

"Every year they select 4 or 5 strains of flu they think might cause epidemics that year and put them in the vaccine. It won't protect you from any other strains, of from a rhinovirus (cold) or from secondary infections like pneumonia. It offers some immunity (not 100%) from the strains of flu in it. "

So I don't think anyone called you a liar.

It's a curious quirk of psychology that we don't process statistics very well. If I said there was a vaccine which offered 100 percent protection from aids I'd be hailed a hero and people would form queues. If I said there was a vaccine which offered a 30 percent protection from flu, nobody would bother. And yet the latter would save many more lives than the former. I wrote a paper on that about 5 years ago. Weird how our minds work.

I have to ask, what do you do for a living Jake? Smile
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Wicked cool.

What's new or coming that we probably don't know about?

You know that's one of the questions we get asked by our patients regularly. I used to ask them if they asked their proctologist the same question. Now I just stroke the top of their foot, look them in the eye, bite my lower lip and say "oh yes, and yours are just divine".

The friction coefficient of an orthotic covering has a major effect on the vector of orthotic reaction force and thus changing what top cover you put on a device can actually change what it does.

Sometimes in poker, a pair of aces loses to a lucky three-of-a kind. But losing in that way isn't a good reason to avoid making the smart bet.

The problem is that the shot is maybe 70% effective, so a lot of people with the shot WILL still get the flu. You'll also have some lucky people who for whatever reason didn't get the shot and didn't catch the flu anyway. This leads to confusion, as both groups are vociferous with their anecdotes. But I look at it another way. If I don't get vaccinated, and end up being a carrier, how many OTHER people am I putting at risk for a horrible time, and possibly even something that could harm them permanently? I don't know the number, but it's non-zero. I'd rather "risk" the shot than Risk putting someone else's loved ones in harm's way.

I see the refusal to get vaccinated as a kind of innumeracy: the inability to draw on the statistics in preference to the anecdotes.

So what we need to do is find some antivaccine people...
And play poker against them!

I got mine this year. I have not had it in a very long while, but I figure if my son has to get it (for daycare), then I should too. (I work with college students, who spread that shit like the plague if it goes around)
