I'd say about half the people I know in the climbing community are atheists and almost none of them are religious. Those are my personal estimates but compared to the regular population it is way skewed differently.

I got thinking about it, and I realized that about 85 percent of the people I do risky stuff with (the 15 percent is my mom), like paragliding, zip lining, climbing, skydiving, etc is either a non believer or at least completely irreligious- like no upbringing with religion, so no exposure to it.

So only anecdotal evidence.

Okay.

I know this is the only life I'll get but there's no fuckin' way I'd scale a 1000' foot cliff face without a rope!

I'm not much into extreme sports myself, but I do enjoy the occasional "jump off high shit while attached to a rope or other life-saving cable" type event. A couple years ago my sister and I did the Shotover Canyon Swing outside Queenstown, NZ. It was super fun. Kind of sad I didn't do a third jump now.

So... of all the atheists you know in the climbing community, almost none of them are religious? I should hope not. Seeing as how they're atheists. Wink
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.

Okay.

Hey moron, you do realize that there hasn't been a study done about the religiousness of rock climbers. Why would someone do that study? Do you thik that anything other than anecdotal evidence exists on the subject? If so I'd be interested to see it. \ Sometimes you Theists have a crazy view of evidence, what constitutes it and when it even exists. I personally know a couple hundred rock climbers and I can't think of a single one who attends a church. Not a single one.

I'm a climber, pretty active in the non-professional scene in my city in England (university societies, local climbing groups etc).

Haven't met anybody who is religious. But then again, nobody in the UK really cares about religion. I go climbing to climb.
