I basically agree with you. I just wonder what Muhammad or the author meant with the "grow out of the earth like a plant/growth" if he isn't referring to evolution. And I think it's strange that the Quran doesn't contradict evolution explicitly like the Bible does.

First of all, the translation seems to depend on the translator.

http://web.quran360.com/site/compare/tr/59/ch/71/v/17

Quote:English: Wahiduddin Khan

how God has produced you from the earth and caused you to grow,

(71:17)

English: Yusuf Ali

"'And Allah has produced you from the earth growing (gradually),

English: Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And Allah hath caused you to grow as a growth from the earth,

(71:17)

English: Muhammad Asad

"'And God has caused you to grow out of the earth in [gradual] growth; and thereafter He will return you to it [in death]:

(71:17)

English: Muhammad Sarwar

and the sun as a torch.

(71:17)

English: Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan

And Allah has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 29, Page 97].

This crap is a Rohrschact test. People look at it and see exactly what they want to see. Religion is the ultimate self-delusion.

How did ancient arabic even function as a language if a sentence could mean so many things? Even "the sun is a torch", which consists of words all the other translations did not even mention.

See Robert Spencer's "Did Mohammed Exist."

He provides evidence that this crap began as a Syriac text which was later pounded into "Arabic." Hence a lot of the translational difficulties.

Creationists who mangle the word "theory" like this are always so smug, like they've hit on some unanswerable problem for the scientific community, when all they have done is demonstrate that they don't understand what the word means in a scientific context.

Jewish Texts, Christian Texts, Islamic Texts are the same crap, but different time.

Quran has nothing to do with science, because it was written by men before the Age of Science.
