I feel outnumbered and hated by the number of Christians I have in my life, especially my dad. I have a sense of relief that I'm finally embracing my disbelief in God and forming my own conclusions that I've fought all these years, but I'm afraid everyone is going to turn their back on me. Some already have. Do any of you guys deal with this? How do you handle it?

Your parents will eventually accept your choice. They may hate it and it may take some time, but eventually they'll get sick of fighting you on it and they'll leave you alone. Meanwhile, there are 20 million of us in the US and you can find many others like you ... the enlightened. You just have to look. Also, this website is a GREAT place to vent any frustrations you may have. Every word you read comes from a real person with real problems, issues and dilemmas. I have found this site to be very helpful in aiding me with handling all the stupids that surround me.

Just continue being a good person, and the Christians around you will begin to notice that you did not turn into a depressed, tattooed, drug addict (just a few of the stereotypes Christians have about atheists).

They will see that you are more or less the same person.

Welcome aboard!

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
