Are You Happy?
#11
RE: Are You Happy?
In spite of the common misconception, I am able to have severe OCD (not the outward compulsion kind) and bouts of depression and still manage to be happy. The mental illness stuff doesn't really count. I have an absolutely amazing relationship, a huge, complicated, pain in the ass family and my dream job (I've always wanted to be a struggling writer). Yep. I'm happy.

RE: Are You Happy?
I would usually say yes but retirement grows near, massive changes are coming next year (common core), I'm not eager to embrace the new challenges, and I'm sure not going to work around the clock to create a new program on 80% pay. But I don't feel quite ready for retirement as a practical concern. Plus I'm used to getting a lot of satisfaction from my work so I'm apprehensive about working at something that I may come to feel I suck at. I don't see a graceful exit strategy. So I'm experiencing more stress than I can live with and still be as happy as I usually am. Retirement will probably pose its own challenges but this transition concerns me much more.

Ahh well it all passes I suppose, myself included all too soon.

It's definitely complicated. I should be over the moon, but depression holds me back, and, in fact, has gotten worse with the freedoms I've been handed. I think I'm missing a bunch of stuff in my life, but I have no idea where to look for it.

Shell, how's your first book? Is it selling? I keep meaning to buy it, but because I'm working on four different novels in four different genres, my reading plate is full at the moment; IMO- the best writers are the best readers. Also, how's the second book coming along?

RE: Are You Happy?

As someone with chronic depression, I've never really bothered with the question of whether I'm happy so much as just how to cope, regardless of how I feel. And having been suicidal for 20 years definitely puts an eight ball in front of me that's far more important than worrying about whether I'm happy. The last five years of my life have been the high point of my intellectual life. I'm very happy with my choices, and my thinking is of a caliber unseen prior to that time. And I wouldn't call it wisdom, but with age has come clarity about who I am as a person, and why. The absence of existential confusion is a wonderful gift.

That being said, I'm usually too busy reacting to the road in front of me to worry about whether I'm happy or not. Fulfilled, yes. Happy? Tonight, yes. Ask me another time and you may get a totally different answer.

Not just happy, but truly joyful. (That's a happiness that is on going and for no material reason.)

Thanks for asking! My second book is done. I have put it aside for now so I can work on two other books. My first is selling as much as I expected it to and I will do a marketing push with it before the sequel comes out. Don't worry about buying it. Just wait until I do another giveaway, if you have a Kindle.

I am happy. I have a beautiful woman in my life, an incredibly quirky and adorable puppy, a great new job that I love, a great outlook, and I was lucky enough to develop a brain that works fantastically. I love my life.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Happy.

For a long time I wasn't. There were a couple times I was dangerously depressed.

I wouldn't say I am "satisfied" - I think ambition for change and growth is good - but despite my bitter tendencies and frustration with certain stupidities...I'm the happiest I've ever been.
