I would humbly suggest that if America has a core value is freedom, not God OR religion OR secularism. I want the right to raise my kids as humanists, Christians or 7th day advent marshmallow hurlers, because they're MY kids, not the states.

I find the "let them be religious but keep it to themselves, we're a secular nation" to be equally as abhorrent as "let them be atheist but keep it to themselves, we're a Christian nation".

I was listening to an Atheist Experience podcast from a few weeks back while driving today, and one of the callers on the line was bleating about the separation of church and state, asserting that it "creates an environment where christians have no say in their culture." I actually blurted out "have you looked at your culture?!"

Any American who sincerely thinks that christianity is persecuted in their country, or that they have less than their fair share of power, is out of their fucking mind.
