Atheism is very, VERY hard.

Well, I'm an atheist, a teen atheist from a christian home and its become super hard. I can't deal with the fact that I'm just going to die. I can't deal with the fact that when I'm on my own, I'm truly alone and nobody will be watching me from above. Without religion, where's the moral code?
What if this god dude is real? I'll be in hell. Hell is scary.
I guess I've joined to see people who share the same beleif that Religion/God is NOT the only way to peace, happiness, life fulfillment etc. I want to debunk the myth that all atheist are depressed because they're lonley and will just turn to dust when they die. Sorry this is really long, thank you.

WELVCOME!

As others have said, it will get easier.

How much time do you spend being frightened of all the other gods and their hells that you were not brought up believing in? Yeah, that's about the same amount of time you should spend worrying about the Christian god/hell.

If you want to watch a great vid on secular morality, and why, even if there is a god, secular morality is superior, google 'superiority of secular morality' by Matt Dilahunty.

You should seek out local free thought and atheist groups.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I have been a Christian for quite a number of years, I use to believe I was happy, but under all that was guilt for just about everything I did, when I finally woke up that there is no god watching me 24/7, I finally started to live. When you start to think about it all without others persuading you, you start to realize that it all sounds ridiculers, I feel embarrassed now realizing the stories that I use to believe were true.

Nothing against you personally

If you're a Christian and you're not living ... give it up. You're doing it wrong

You've never walked a day in the life of a Mormon, have you? You have no idea what a person in the Westboro Baptist Church deals with on a daily basis, do you? My point is that not every Christian experience is rainbows and skittles. Try thinking like a fundamentalist for a day, and then come back and tell us just how strange the world starts to look to you.

The short version? Stop trying to invalidate his personal experience; you're doing it wrong.

Like some others here, I was also in the same boat. It hasn't been very long since I "escaped", and while it was extremely hard in the beginning, it's getting better. There's a freedom that comes from not being bound up in useless doctrine anymore. The more I read, investigate, discover for myself, watch and hear, the more unbelievable the concept of "God" becomes. I see life as more precious now, and am a hundred times happier than I was before. It's liberating kicking off the shackles of fear.

The way I see it now, death is inevitable, and not really something to fear. Do you fear going to sleep? I see death as simply going to sleep and never waking up. It's not scary, because I won't know any better. I won't have thoughts or feelings. No regrets. Whereas when I still believed in hell, death was frightening, and often brought me to my knees. And that, my friend, is no way to live. Letting someone else or a non existent someone else, rather, make you feel bad for being human.

Welcome! Smile

LittleA - one of the things that should be part of learning to be an adult is accepting the things you can't change and the things that are out of your control.

Religion is a way for people to feel 'in control' of death and chaos. They want there to be a reason for the senseless things they experience, and the finality of death, and the fact that sometimes guilty people go free and innocent people get punished. Religion becomes the 'equalizer' - they imagine that everyone will "get what's coming to them" - good or bad - no matter what happens in this life.

When you accept that you can't control everything, it frees you up to concentrate the things you can.

Death comes to everyone. And then your body returns to the cycle it came from. In between, you were given the gift of life and consciousness. Enjoy it! Savor it! Don't waste it worrying about what a make-believe punisher cares about. You have so many things to do and to be. You don't have to worry about a god taking care of you. You can worry about helping take care of the human race! (something god fails at miserably)

Once it is understood that fear is merely a sad tactic to alter one's perception of reality, it becomes easier to dismiss all the ignorance they perpetuate.

No offence meant.

I'm talking to all Christians (as I understand that to mean, ie mainstream trinitarian). The point is to enhance your life. If it doesn't, give it up.
