Atheism is very, VERY hard.

RE: Atheism is very, VERY hard.
There's so much to live for! It really does get better with time. It may be depressing at first to think that there's no sky daddy watching everyone at all times, but it's amazing to think that we live in a time that holds opportunities for our species; we've built countless civilizations, discovered countless wonders in this vast universe, and even learned how to pass our knowledge on to later generations in an effort to further advance our species. We may also very well be the only organisms on earth capable of ingenuity; we may be the only things on this planet able to fathom the mysteries outside this world, or to imagine what's locked deep within it.

Ultimately, life is exactly what you make it; it's up to you to decide who you will be, but there are many like-minded individuals here who are willing to discuss your concerns for your future.

Well, I'm an atheist, a teen atheist from a christian home and its become super hard. I can't deal with the fact that I'm just going to die. I can't deal with the fact that when I'm on my own, I'm truly alone and nobody will be watching me from above. Without religion, where's the moral code?
What if this god dude is real? I'll be in hell. Hell is scary.
I guess I've joined to see people who share the same beleif that Religion/God is NOT the only way to peace, happiness, life fulfillment etc. I want to debunk the myth that all atheist are depressed because they're lonley and will just turn to dust when they die. Sorry this is really long, thank you.

I have only very recently become an atheist/agnostic in the last few weeks. I have been asking myself the self same questions for around 10 years now. I am almost 30 and I have just taken the leap.

If you ever, ever need a chat, don't hesitate to ask. Peruse my own story if you would like to know a little more about me. You will certainly see some intriguing similarities, I am sure.

Good luck.

I think the fear of hell fire is one of the main reasons Christianity and Islam survived that long .

Welcome Little fish!
Remember: what if the Aztecs were right and we ought to get the hearts out of some people to end all this strange weather?
What it the Vikings were right all a long and only those who die in battle get to go to Valhalla?
What if we should really aim for Valinor and fear the Dark Lord Sauron?

There are many "What ifs" that can creep up on you, if you don't believe them... does that make them real?
In the end... if something nasty awaits... then you'll have to call the management, for they failed to provide you with adequate reliable guidance.

It'll get easier as you get older, but i'll toss you some advice.

The whole death issue, and could there be something after death, maybe, but more likely there is nothing. It sounds worse then it probably is. My train of thought on this is when you go to sleep and don't remember dreaming, it's just nothing.. it's no big deal. Plus when you die everything is shutoff, you'll have no fear, thoughts anything. The idea of it is the only scary thing about it, the action of it doesn't sound that bad to me. Live your life now, fuck death.

The moral code existed before religion, religions claim to morality is about as false as their claim of creating marriage. They may make claims to instituting such things, but these things would be in place with or without religion.

If god is real then he/she is a genocidal dick and I much rather be in hell with a much more level headed fallen angel by the name of Lucifer.

Honestly, don't sweat that shit, more then likely god isn't real, live your life.

Well I think that's the first time I've had the slightest idea what the fear is! Smile

Welcome lil fish! I think it's good to fear some things, but believing just because you fear is no reason to believe.

Man, I totally know where you are coming from when you say you are afraid of Hell. I sometimes get that too. There is nothing more awful than eternal torment. Just remember that it is a scare tactic, nothing more. And whatever you, now probably isn't a good time to read Dante's Inferno.Tongue

As for your questions about morality, it is up to you to decide what is moral & what is not. All morality is man made, even if said men claim it is god-given. I would suggest to you that you read Nietzsche's Genealogy; it explains where morality comes from.

Welcome Little A!

Once you've fully let go of the indoctrination, you'll really see how great life is when you are able to live it without a tether.

Yep, when you die, it's all over. And there is no one there at all times to make sure you're doing everything you're supposed to. But you have one shot at this life. You have one chance to enjoy what you have, the people you love, the things you love to do.

Step back and think about it a little bit. Do you want to do shitty things when you are alone? Is the only reason to be a good person because there might be something watching over you? Or is life just better and more enjoyable when you are proud of your actions and the way you treat people? Is acting rightly the way you become successful in a social structure? On the face of it, if the only reason a person is moral is because they fear god, then they really aren't moral are they? Not truly, if you ask me.

If you are truly ready to give up the ghost, then you'll find that the more you read and learn, the more ridiculous all that god stuff really is.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
