How DOES the GOP do it?

How DOES the GOP do it?
http://crooksandliars.com/2014/03/war-mo...oins-right

Quote:Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld discussed the Ukraine crisis and the Obama administration’s foreign policy on tonight's "On The Record."

Rumsfeld called America weak. He said, “The U.S. is behaving in a way that tells the world we’re in decline, that we’re in withdrawal. We’ve created a leadership vacuum in the world, and it is being filled by the Putins of the world, by people without our values or our interests.”

The former defense secretary said the government needs to assemble a coalition to explore putting “pressure of all types” on Putin and the Russian Federation, but that the U.N. isn’t going to agree to that.

“If we want peace, we have to be prepared for war … it is U.S. weakness that has shaken the world,” he said, pointing to a lack of military spending and proposed cuts to the defense budget.

Wait, last time I checked, every conservative who could get in front of a microphone was screaming, "We're broke! Slash food stamps! We need to stop spending money we don't have!"

Now, every conservative who can get in front of a microphone is bemoaning the very modest cuts to defense spending, crying, "We have to be the self-appointed World Policeman! Increase Defense spending now!"

And they can shift on a dime like this with absolutely no sense of irony.

Anyone read George Orwell's 1984? Remember that described scene where Oceania suddenly changes sides in the war in the middle of some leader's speech and the leader just changes right with the new policy as if nothing was different? When I read that, it was like the stuff of satire, exaggerated to drive home a point. Yet, this is what the GOP has become. These people are infinitely reprogramable with absolutely no memory of any of the things they were saying only a few weeks ago.

To put in perspective of just how absurd this sudden shift in GOP talking points really is, here is a graph that shows the proposed discretionary spending:

And here is our defense budget compared to other nations:

Hey! I thought we spend more on our military than the rest of the world combined. We only make up 41% of it.

Man, are we slippin'.

Nobody knows about ruining American prestige and weakening our influence abroad like Scumsfeld, so I guess he knows what he is talking about.

That could include giving him a hand job, wouldn't it? Might help defuse the crisis and would only cost twenty bucks.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Why pay for 3,333 families to eat this month? Those million-dollar cruise missiles we'll just end up decommissioning in twenty years won't buy themselves.

RE: How DOES the GOP do it?
Why would anyone want to spend that amount of money and continuously be at war with the world?
What is the perceived gain in all of this?

RE: How DOES the GOP do it?
Quote:The business of war is profitable. In 2011, the 100 largest contractors sold $410 billion in arms and military services. Just 10 of those companies sold over $208 billion. Based on a list of the top 100 arms-producing and military services companies in 2011 compiled by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 companies with the most military sales worldwide.

These companies have benefited tremendously from the growth in military spending in the U.S., which by far has the largest military budget in the world. In 2000, the U.S. defense budget was approximately $312 billion. By 2011, the figure had grown to $712 billion. Arm sales grew alongside general defense spending growth. SIPRI noted that between 2002 and 2011, arms sales among the top 100 companies grew by 51%.
