So U think Vegan is healthy?
RE: So U think Vegan is healthy?
The level of obesity in America is ~35%, not 69%. If you're going to be a nutritionist that's a fact that you might want to get right. Wink

I go back now to what Alex Jamieson said on the subject which is that the very meaning of veganism has changed from when she became a vegan originally, and is now centred around a political view not a health-conscious view, and that while some people do great on a vegan diet, others do not.

Being that veganism is an extreme diet (vegans are excluding two out of the five major food groups entirely - that's extreme) it's not sensible or moral to tell people that if they eat that way that it will be the best way to eat for them, but if they want to give it a go, try and see if it works for them then that's fine too.

If your answer for Harvey's case is "piss poor nutrition information" then 1. how does that explain him getting sick from the age of seven? And 2. - this is the really important one - what specifically did he do wrong? He has provided ample information about his vegan diet in his videos, so I wouldn't suggest harassing him to give you further details, however, if he did something wrong with the way he ate then you have to be specific and let us know what it was?

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

I am not his doctor, if she was seeing his doctor, I already found his major issue. Ever wonder how much Nutritional Science a doctor receives? Almost none, which is why there are nutritionists.

Let me break this video down into RED FLAGS. Keep in mind this is my perspective and again is open game.

1. 55 seconds in he/she? he mentioned doctors, that is a huge problem. I am starting here because I nor hopefully you would go to your optometrist for gastrological issue or question, so why go to a Medical Doctor who studies Medicine to answer your Nutritional needs, most people do not understand, but Doctors have little to no training or education in nutrition or Nutritional Science.

Yes I get you were raised vegetarian but that in no way means you are raised and educated on what the body needs and know where to get it.

Most Americans are still so uneducated in nutrition they still believe that b12 can only be found in meat or supplements!

Where may I ask did you pull 35% it is such a low number, the number the schools and even government are putting out are much higher?

Can I just chip in about the 35% or 69% thing?

Around ~35% of Americans are classed as obese, 69% are classed as overweight or obese. I just Google and found a whole bunch of sources, but every time I try to paste more than one here I lose my post, so fuck that. They're there on Google for you both to check.

That's not correct, I know a number of GP's. There are 4 GP's at my Church, I'm friends with another GP. It's true that GP's specialize in diagnosing and providing treatment for medical conditions, but it isn't true that they are incapable of providing nutritional advice, or where they deem it necessary refer them on to nutritionists. What is, however, true is that most of the medical conditions that Harvey suffered were not ever directly thought to be associated with diet, or deficiencies. It's only recently that we've been learning the effects of dietary deficiencies - including B12, zinc, calcium, cholesterol, etc.

Most personal trainers can give you good nutritional advice as well - however they are not qualified to diagnose and treat medical conditions that arise from a deficient diet, and nor for that matter are nutritionists. Nutritionists can provide excellent nutritional advice to clients - yes, better advice than the average GP, however they are not qualified to treat medical conditions. Harvey suffered from medical conditions, you do not go to a nutritionist to solve medical conditions - you can look at diet as a remedy, clearly/obviously, however a doctor is the right person to see about a medical condition.

You quoted the number of overweight (including obese) and cited it as being the number of obese. Overweight people have a BMI of 25-29.9% and obese people have a BMI of 30+.

You mention that they are starting to learn more about nutrition in medical studies that is fantastic, which state is this? I know they 'touch' upon nutrition but are not really focused on for apparent reasons

I'm in Australia, what I meant was that people such as Harvey are the reason that we are learning about dietary deficiencies and the effects they can have on health - not him specifically. If I ask 100 random people on the street what the effects of low cholesterol are I can bet you my life savings that less than 10% would have any clue, yet nearly 100% would know at least some of the effects of high cholesterol. 30 Banana a Day tells people that they don't need to eat any cholesterol because the body makes it - very dangerous advice.

And the other thing I mean is that it's only now that we're beginning to learn about the effects of long-term veganism. It's true that many people find that a vegan diet is helpful for their health, however long term it's a different story. Alex Jamieson - a qualified nutritionist who specializes in vegan diets - found that after 10 or 11 years on her vegan diet (which was helpful for her at the start) was unsustainable for her health. Her periods were happening fortnightly - and as a qualified nutritionist who's an expert on veganism was unable to heal on vegan diet. She now eats meat - albeit not very much meat, but enough that she feels is right for her.

I am aware that nutrition is a very minor portion of the general medical practitioners degree requirements Daniel.

Ergo, you GP won't know much about nutrition other than what he/she is told by pharmaceutical companies

That is interesting but I beg the question as to what other factors are happening here. There is a Cardiologist whom is 98, been vegan 70+ years with zero medical conditions who swears by the diet. There is also a 110? year old woman who is also vegan.

Women are confusing enough so maybe she changed something somewhere along the line, nutrition is forever expanding their knowledge. Maybe she needs to bone up on new material.

I don't know enough about her case but I am sure there is more to the story than that. I have seen too many cases of extremely long life styles of vegan diets that are successful.

But I agree with you for the most part:

I don't know too many details but I did find:

Also I dug a bit further and found she isn't a nutritionist, she is a health coach.

But to be honest I don't buy into the dogma of Vegan long term being unhealthy, mainly because in my medical observance I have found it to be too much the opposite.

But again my opinion.

Don't bother blackswordsman, I tried to tell the OP that people can live their life on green diets and he had a shit fit.
If the hypothetical idea of an afterlife means more to you than the objectively true reality we all share, then you deserve no respect.

No worries, I am not here to push it either way. But I do love pointing out the medical side of things that people tend to overlook.

But hey who listens to Harvard Medical University or The Johns Hopkins Hospital anyway Thinking
