You're not far wrong, tBt. A lot of folk don't realize that baseball is mentioned in the Bible.

Do you guys get annoyed when an athlete credit's their great performance, form or their team's success on a higher power? Typically "I am blessed to be here" or thanking their god for having a great game or performance. Personally I hate it when I hear the "Blessed" word.

As a big sports fan you hear this all the time especially in American sports. Yes a lot of high level athletes have amazing natural abilities but some have worked bloody hard to get where they are, others a combination.

Are they just being humble? Not wanting to sound full of themselves or over confident, as a way to please fans etc..

What are your thoughts?

I think that when you've been indoctrinated into a religion, it just becomes automatic to thank a god for everything that goes right, and defend him when everything goes wrong.

What bugs me about this particular topic is that it sends a message that the rest of us mere mortals I guess are not 'blessed' by their god(s) in the same manner. So, 'God' chooses who will be a star athete and who won't be? lol

I'm a big MMA and combat sport fan and I always crack up when someone thanks Jesus for their victory. Yes, you moron, Jesus wanted you beat another man into unconsciousness.

"Humble" in a narcissistic childish gullible way. I find the concept of one's good fortune being the part of a "plan" absurd knowing all the worldwide death from all sorts of things. If an all powerful god has the time for you to get rich playing a sport, or owning a business, or making music, then certainly this same "all powerful" god could stop the suffering of those who have it far worse.

Kathy Griffin said it best "Suck it Jesus".

The reality is that if you make it, it was you your work and a bit of luck as well, nothing more. No divine magic man helping you.

The god concept explains absolutely nothing about the nature of reality. It does however explain everything about human gullibility, selection bias and sample rate error.

well put!

The irony of all of this is that if a god should exist, and according to most Christians he is a 'loving' god, it would stand to reason that he would be 'against' competition. Especially competition for financial gain, and/or sport/entertainment. It's one thing to play a game of checkers with a friend, to pass the time. Or an online game, etc. Another thing to amass wealth due to beating the fuck out of another person, or rushing a ball into the end zone for $2 million yearly.

But, until someone steps away from religion, he/she is lost in the trees, and can't see the forest. :/
