Quote:Georgia’s tax credit program siphons off much-needed funds from the state’s public schools by allowing taxpayers to donate scholarship money to private religious schools, according to a lawsuit.

Four taxpayers filed the suit, claiming the state has failed to adequately fund its underachieving public schools while helping to pay for religious instruction, in Fulton County Superior Court, reported Courthouse News.

The suit claims Georgia’s “scheme” allows individual taxpayers and corporations to receive dollar-for-dollar tax credits for donations and contributions made to private Student Scholarship Organizations, which then distribute the redirected tax funds for scholarships to private schools.

Yep... that sounds like something that would happen in the Bible Belt.

51% of Georgia educational spending is provided by the state. Because of the recession state tax receipts are down. Meanwhile they are giving massive tax breaks to xtian scumbags to put their kids in private schools.

It looks to me like the money may go to any type of private schools, not just christian schools. Parents of kids in private schools still pay taxes for public schools. They're not only supporting public schools financially, but their children are not using the facililties and resources, thus saving money for the school system. They're also leaving more space open, leading to smaller class sizes. They are actually a benefit to the public school system. Since the parents are wealthier, they probably pay a large portion of the taxes that go to the publlic schools. What's wrong with giving them financial grants once in awhile?

It's subsidizing religion. That's a no-no.

The scholrships are not going to the schools, but rather to students in the schools who may or may not be of a religious affiliation. If what you're saying applies, the students of any religious affiliation should not be able to get any kind of taxpayer-funded assistance from the state.

No. You have to look at the meaning of "separation of church and state" with some common sense.
