Not sure that's correct.

I think good arguments can be made for at least some level of genetic determination of behaviour:

Personality and intellect are genetically determined to some degree. These factors effect our perception and hence what we learn and how we respond to experience.

It's also my perception that some behaviours are hardwired.Eg The flight/ response is instinctive and leads indirectly to xenophobia. Traits of empathy and compassion have also been observed in other primates,implying a genetic factor.


I reject the notion of spiritual as I understand it. Viz; based on a dualistic world view.

Padraic, the dispositional (genetic) human personality traits are attributable to such ailments as ADHD, Anxiety disorders, etc. These are the outward signs of internal processes.
As for perception, this is aqured through culture and instilled in us with values and beliefs.
The fight/flight response is also learned and learned (or failed to be learned), through exposure to situations, watching parents, or learning ineffective skills from our parents can 'help' us aquire similarity in what is/isn't dispositional behaviour.
Psychology has progressed a long way since behavioural psychology dominated the scene.

I have no reason to doubt you, nor to simply accept your assertions as correct.You may be right,or not.

As far as I'm aware the nature/nurture debate is far from resolved. For me the causes of human behaviour remain a mixture of both, although I have no idea of the precise ratio. Neither does anyone else, yet.

In daily life I lean towards psychological determinism,rejecting the notion of free will.

Determinism belongs to the psychodynamic constructs of Sigmund Freud, not dispositional theory. Also, I knew you lacked some knowledge of the subject so I gave you a link to check out. It's very neat and allows some of Freud's earlier ideas to gain acceptance at long last, as after Freud, Edward Taub took a good shot at it and had to spend his life savings in years of court battles to have 113 of 117 charges dropped for testing performed on monkeys.
This was hampered in until Bach-Y-Rita persued the very same plasticity subject, which had begun with Freud, by what has been termed "locationalism". So you can appreciate how frustrating it is to have someone without understanding of something tell you that you're wrong.

I don't really know what you're saying here TW. 'Imposed' is a loaded qualification. I'd say morality is learned and inspired, and also innate. In Nazi society a certain moral compass was unnaturally imposed. It follows that a person not choosing to follow 'healthy' morals (which is what I'd call Christian morals) would be similarly at risk of skewed morals.

An 'inner voice' is corruptible internally and externally.

I beg to differ.
A human only becomes what they're exposed to, what they learn through experiences. The moral guidance that is taught, becomes that inner guide to morality which is that little voice. The innate morals are only morals that have become second nature through repeated practice-reinforcement. Obviously bad behaviour will have negative consequences and so will deter a thinking person from repeating such acts; conversely, treating others appropriately will tend to produce 'good' results and reinforces those.

I think the bible is what you mean here. And it is essentially the same thing as being taught to live in a way that was considered to be in accordance with "god's" wishes a long time ago. I call following this uninspired.
