It was the 90s and it was on HBO. It was a different time.
Chris Meloni was nude frequently . . . . . . The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
I'm all for nude men....not much into rape and gruesome murder

There are no real prisons with that many unsolved murders (think about that), it was almost as though the producers and the writers were crossing the fourth wall with the loony plot stuff to pimp the viewers. The prison staff was spectacularly clueless about the plethora of murders and rapes, except when specific staffers were involved in them. Officer Howell murdered a Russian inmate by dropping a radio in his bath tub. Beecher grew out his fingernails so he could rip the throat out of an evil corrections officer. The Chris Meloni character seemed to murder somebody every episode. The rapes were frequently meted out as 'just deserts'. Like the mafia guy getting raped twice, and then one of the Aryans winding up with Wolgang Cutler, and getting raped all the time, willingly, so he wouldn't get murdered by somebody else. One of the latin guys, Ortolani I think, killed several inmates. The court system did manage to get a very occasional inmate executed, like Cyril Riley, but that was nothing compared to the carnage the inmates were doing to each other. The writers spent several episodes lining up Supreme Allah to kill Adebesi. Adebesi was an asshole, he raped Kenny Spangler and the Mafia guy, Schibetta. Hell, they even made a joke about Adebesi not wiping after having a BM. Prison staff would occasionally snag an inmate for a rule violation, have them stripped naked and thrown in the hole. That happened to Robson (we get to see his chewed off wiener!!) and the Meloni character too. Many episodes had shower scenes. Great way to build up tension and viewer numbers at the same time. So, the gist is, there was so much violence it became fun. Bless HBO for all 7 seasons !!! The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
