For me it would provide good feedback on whether my posts are even read. Many times I post up and get totally ignored and I think people find my posts terrible. Yep, maybe I am too insecure or maybe THEY really are out to get me!

True, but there is the very real possibility of people seeing a ton of negatives at the bottom of the post, and not reading it at all because of that. There is also the possibility that people might make the system 'personal', like downing theists every time they talk about their beliefs.

Also, people might start using it as a mere 'I disagree'... and they might not explain the reasoning behind that. Kudos is there so that people don't have to make filler 'I agree' or 'Well written' fluff posts...

A thumbs down would be to say 'I disagree' or some other form of 'bleh', with no explanation behind it. Then a person would ask you why you disagree, and it would only end up creating a ton of off-topic fluff posts. I don't think i wrote this last bit very well :S I now what I mean to say, but I seem to be having difficulty saying it Tongue

RE: Kudos Update
Well, I'm glad you have yourself convinced. I get that it CAN be abused but it doesn't follow that it WILL be abused. By your logic we shouldn't have a rate-down ability regarding reputation or even an ability to post at all.

1. Last_Ray has abused the mechanism for posting
2. posting can be abused
3. Nobody should be allowed to post on these forums

I say if there is a good reason to have a way of giving a quick thumbs up there should be a quick thumbs down. It is just as confusing to see random thumb ups with no explaination.

If there was a post with a lot of thumbs in either direction it will only get more attention; think train wrecks and car accidents and the fact of morbid curiosity.

By the way, I am not in love with the idea or even frustrated that it hasn't been implemented, it was merely a suggestion and now I am having fun defending it!

That is different, because it isn't a 'fluff post' Tongue The reason we have the kudos system is foremost to cut down on fluff posting, as far as I'm aware at least Smile

My only serious complaint to a thumbs down system is the fluff it would generate because of people asking why a person downrated their post. The other problems could possibly be solved with a lot of hard work by the forum programmers. An 'i agree' is a very simple statement... there are very few things a person could be agreeing with, and there is very little that can be questioned of an 'i agree'. However, an i disagree could be disagreeing with any or all of a post, and the questions for it can perhaps be innumerable.

A lot of fluff would be generated simply by the statement of 'I disagree', and as the kudos system is there to get rid of fluff: it seems counterproductive to add in an 'i disagree' system Smile
